Many Americans today believe the American dream has faded away and is no longer achievable.
The American dream throughout history has meant many different things to Americans, and
Immigrants. The old American dream is what many Americans
believe today. The Old American Dream is “you go to college,
get a degree, go directly into a well-paying job in your field,
work there for 30 years, then get a pension plan and a Rolex
when you retire.” The only problem is that people offering
these jobs aren’t planning ahead and now overburden
themselves with things like retirement plans. The old
American Dream is a thing of the past with Americas
advancement in technology, and increased wealth. In the past
people believed that these steps of the American dream defined the American dream. These steps are
too perfect to be an American dream for everyone; its unachievable.
The New American Dream is an entrepreneurial journey that is different than anything else.
Entrepreneurship has always been a hard journey for aspiring entrepreneurs. In the past, marketing a
product has been a big barrier to entry. You had to pay major news networks to put your product on the
air. Today, you gain followers on social media platforms
such as Instagram, or Facebook. You post a picture and it
could spread like fire. Social media marketing is free, or
relatively inexpensive. Making money in the United States is
not hard. Look around and see what Americans spend
money on and how much they are willing to spend.
Americans will buy anything.
Tesla owner and CEO Elon musk is currently one of the worlds richest, and most talked about
entrepreneur, at age seventeen he moved from South Africa to Canada to escape the mandatory
military service. Here he studied at Queens University. In 1992 he left to study business and physics at
the University of Pennsylvania. After, he headed to Stanford to get a PhD in energy physics but ended up
moving just in time for the Internet boom and left Stanford after two days. Since then Musk has founded
X.com (PayPal), SpaceX, and Tesla motors. He is now worth over Twenty-Two billion dollars and
continues to grow his businesses. Every street corner is ruled by an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is all
around us and will never stop driving the United States economy.
Jennifer Williams a local entrepreneur who founded Interior Perfection, a small cleaning
business says “Creating my own business allowed me to make more time for my children.” Jennifer has
been running her small business for the last seven years where she cleans residential, and commercial
spaces. “owning a business is absolutely my version of the American dream. There is no better job in the
world than the one that you create. Being able to work when I want and be able to experience my
children’s life not being behind a desk is the best feeling in the world.”
The American dream has had many different meanings throughout history. Entrepreneurship
has led many immigrants, and Americans to feel that American dream. Across the globe people wish to
pursue this version of the American dream, and many will continue to move to our beautiful country
with high hopes and dreams.
