Students Enrollment in Scholastic Aptitude Test at Warwick Institute

Scholastic Aptitude Test or SAT, one of the standardized admissions tests run by a non-

profit program named College Board in the United States, is being used by many international

universities around the world for college entrance (Heimbach, 2019). In addition, it is used to test

all students’ critical thinking and English skills to ensure that the applicants have required skills.

At the same time, an international program of Chulalongkorn University, one of the forefront of

universities in Thailand, and other universities with international programs have been developing

and making them more effective and more popular in Thailand. This effectiveness affects the

number of students enrolling for the SAT in tutorial schools. There are more private school

students who studying SAT at Warwick Institute, one of the most famous tutorial schools in

Thailand.

The purpose of this research is to find out the different number of students between

private and international schools studying for SAT at tutorial schools. This research is important

to show how important SAT to some students whether in international or private schools is. The

author uses three academic articles from different sources to relate the consolidating data which

the author gathers from the tutorial institute to other research studies.
The consolidated data showed the different numbers of students from private schools,

public schools, international schools, and General Education Development (GED) studying for SAT

at Warwick Institute in 2018. The figure below shows that most of the students studying at

Warwick Institute are from the private schools which is 976 students or 39% of all students

followed by 920 students or 37% from public schools, 572 students or 23% from international

schools, and 30 students or 1% from GED. The data shows that students from private and public

schools are the major students at Warwick Institute. There are 404 more students in private

schools studying for SAT at Warwick Institute than those who are from international schools.

In recent years, education has undergone many changes. There has been increasing

interest in studying at tutorial schools due to many factors. The skills of each student partially

depend on different teaching skills, how effective the teachers teach their classes as well as

fundamental skills in each student (Melaragno, 2013). One of the tutorial studies was conducted

by Campbell (2011). They determined the effects of the tutoring program and found that tutored

students had dramatically higher grade point average (GPA) compared to non-tutored students.

At the same time, most colleges in the United States require SAT as the standardized test for any

graduated high school students to enroll their college, providing opportunities for any national

students who reach the standard score of SAT, differently set by each college, to apply in those

colleges. Additionally, tutoring is a process to achieve students’ goals by training and supporting

their students with knowledge (Martín, 2017). By tutoring, students who are from private or

public schools might have more opportunities to get higher score than self-studying.
This research report concludes that there is an increase in the number of students from

private schools that concern about Scholastic Aptitude Test which is widely used for college

entrance in international programs at Thai universities. Studying for SAT at tutorial school has an

important role to some students in developing students’ critical thinking and English skills to

ensure that the applicants have the required skills for those universities.
