1.1 The plant capacity factor of a 600 MW coal-fired power plant is 0.65. Calculate the amount of coal to
be supplied to the plant per annum if it is consumed at the rate of 0.40 kg/kWh.

1.2 The efficiency of a 2 MW diesel power station is 40%. Calculate the specific fuel consumption in
kg/kWh if the calorific value of the fuel is 10,000 kcal/kg (41,855 kJ/kg). Also calculate the amount of fuel
consumed per annum if the plant capacity factor is 20%.

1.3 The efficiency of a 600 MW coal-fired power plant is 33% and annual plant capacity factor is 60%. The
plant consumes lignite coal with heating value of 20,927 kJ/kg, and carbon and ash contents respectively
of 67% and 8%. Calculate the amount of carbon dioxide and fly ash released into the atmosphere on per
annum basis. Assume that 70% of the ash is released through stack as fly ash (or particulate matter).

1.4 Calculate the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere per annum for using a 60 W incandescent
bulb on average 8 hours daily. Also calculate the amount of CO2 emissions that can be avoided and amount
of money that can be saved if it is replaced with an equivalent 20 W compact florescent lamp (CLF).
Assume that the power is supplied by a coal-fired power plant with 10% transmission and distribution
losses and the cost of electricity is Rs 10.00/kWh.

1.5 Calculate CO2 emissions if the power plant of Problem 1.1 is replaced with a combined-cycle natural
gas power plant with an efficiency of 44%. Let the energy density of natural gas be 55,340 kJ/kg with 77%
carbon content.

1.6 Calorific value of coal supplied to a 500 MW coal-fired power plant is 26000 kJ/kg. How much coal
will be consumed by the plant in one hour operating at full load when its thermal efficiency is 30% and
generator efficiency is 95%?
1.7 A coal-fired power plant consumes coal at the rate of 5000 kg/hour with calorific value 7500 kcal/kg.
Calculate electrical energy produced per day if overall efficiency of the plant is 30%.
1.8 The efficiency of super-critical 1320 MW (2×660 MW) capacity coal-fired power plant in Sahiwal
(Pakistan) is 42.11%. The imported coal for this plant has a heating value of 20.2 MJ/kg. Calculate the
amount of coal consumed per year if the plant operates for 22 hours per day.

1.9 The calorific value of the gas to be supplied to a steam power plant with a capacity of 150 kW is 1200
kcal/m3. If the plant is running at full capacity, calculate the amount of gas required per day.
1.10 A 50 kW diesel power plant has an overall efficiency of 40%. If the calorific value of the fuel is 12,000
kcal/kg, calculate the amount of diesel consumed per hour and electrical energy generated in kWh per
ton of fuel.
