On February 22nd, 2018, about 20,000 teachers
across the state of West Virginia walked out of
school in an organized protest for higher wages and
better salaries. The whole ordeal began in response
to the governor of West Virginia, Jim Justice, sign-
ing a legislation which would provide all state
workers with a two percent salary increase starting
in July of 2018 and an additional one percent pay
increase for teachers in 2020 and again in 2021.
However, the state teachers union was outraged
and stated that the raises wouldn’t cover the steadi-
ly increasing cost of living and the bill also failed
to address other concerns such as employee insur-
ance programs, health care costs, and payroll tax
deduction options.
In order to display their indignation, thousands
of teachers and their supporters marched down to
the states capitol in Charlestown to protest. As a
result of the teachers strike, 680 public schools in
all 55 counties of West Virginia were closed for
over a week, thus impacting 277,137 students.
Realizing the impact of pulling children out of
school for that extended period of time, the state
government responded hastily. On February 28th,
2018, Governor Justice announced that he would
refine the bill so that teachers and other education-
related employees would instead get a 5% raise in
the first year-- as long as the state lawmakers
passed the bill. With this announcement being
made it appeared that the strike would soon be
coming to an end and the students would be able to
resume their regular school schedules. However,
said bill only passed the house of delegates before
failing the approval of the senate and this surfaced
even more issues.
The Senate President, Mitch Carmichael, did
not want to pass the bill and instead suggested
spending the states funds on the Public Employee
Insurance Agency, the state’s health insurance
program. The Teachers Union was infuriated by his
suggestion and responded by saying that, “Senator
Carmichael has made every effort to derail the
agreement with the Governor and keep our public
schools closed again next week. His rhetoric, pos-
turing, and actions has inflamed educators, state
superintendents, parents, citizens, as well as his
fellow legislators.” However, despite his personal
disapproval, the bill was eventually passed. After
nine consecutive cancelled school days and 13
days of protesting, teachers and students finally
returned to school on March 6th, 2018.
This is not the end, though. The movement has
inspired teachers across the country. In Oklahoma,
it’s sparked conversations of following in West
Virginia’s footsteps and having their own state-
wide walk out in early April if the legislature
doesn’t raise their pay by then. Additionally, a
pending bill in Kentucky threatens to reduce pen-
sions for retired teachers and is resulting protests
and even talks of strikes. Though this is currently
considered unusual, we can expect to see many
more states country wide mimic West Virginia’s
example in the upcoming future.

18-year-old Julian Hernandez, this
process became a much bigger
nightmare than just deciding on a
university.
While going through the typical
college procedures, his high school counselor
discovered that Julian was listed as missing by
the National Center for Missing and Exploited
Children after noticing a discrepancy with a so-
cial security number. This is when the truth be-
gan to seep through the cracks.
It turns out that Julian’s father, Bobby, had
taken his son when he was five years old and left
behind only a note for the boys mother that said
he had taken their son. The two weren’t married
but Bobby threatened multiple times that he
would steal their son and runoff if Gloria left
him. Julian was told that his mother and father
had broken up and that they moved away from
her peacefully.

Bobby was arrested at the factory he was
working at and pleaded guilty to charges that
included kidnapping, interference of custody,
tampering with records, and forgery, claiming
that his son was too important to him and that he
had no other option. The two fled from their
home in Alabama and were found in Cleveland
with new licenses and social security cards.
He was sentenced to four years in prison but
both he and his son feel this is an inappropriate
punishment. Julian says that he has forgiven his
father but admitted that he felt a bit deprived
since he was never given the chance to have a
relationship with his mother, who says she con-
sidered suicide at her darkest times during the
years her son was missing. Even though he had
been living a secret life, Julian excelled in school
and thanks his father for every opportunity he
gave him. Bobby has been seeking early release
from prison but it is rumored that prosecutors
will oppose this request.

Over the last couple weeks, there has been
multiple proposals that teachers should start
carrying guns. Using the excuse that it protects
the children, teachers in Ohio, Texas, and 8
other states are pushing heavily to allow their K
-12 schools to carry guns. But as expected, a lot
of controversy comes with this kind of change.
This whole subject should just be blown over,
and dropped. So far 10 states allow teachers to
carry guns, and it should end there. Having
teachers hold guns has a lot of negative impacts
on the kids, and everyone else. First off, it will
give a lot of kids the wrong idea. When a third
grader is constantly laying eyes on the gun
strapped to it’s teacher’s waist, it will put
thoughts in their head that shouldn’t be in a
third graders head. As bad as it sounds, it will
happen because that’s how much society has
impacted the youth. Second, is it simply increas-
es violence. Having weapons throughout the
building can increase the chance of a school
shooting.
Even though it will be strapped onto the
teachers body, one slip up and a kid can end up
with a gun in his/her hand. If the teacher acci-
dently leaves it laying on a desk, leaves it in
their bag, or leaves it laying out, a clueless stu-
dent can get a hold of it and mis properly use it.
Although the chances of this are slim, it is still
an increased chance over not having a gun in the
classroom at all. Another con of teachers legally
carry guns is even if there was a shooting, it
would most likely end in a death. Most of the
time, when school shooters don’t shoot them-
selves after the act they are caught and locked
up for a long, long time. Doing this puts them
through the pain and suffering for years.
If a school shooting were to occur, the
teacher would most likely shoot without think-
ing and could possibly kill the shooter without
finding out the motive, or why it occurred. As
stupid as it sounds, you don’t always want to
kill the shooter because key pieces of infor-
mation will never be found, making it a mys-
tery. Last, is it makes the teachers more of a
target. If there were to be a school shooter, they
would most likely target the other weapon hold-
ers first. If a student knows a teacher has a gun,
they will fire at them first to take away their

choice to teach as they have been gun-free.

Despite being categorized as a strong feminist, Jennifer Lawrence
had critics rushing to her defense against twitter-goers who made
groundless claims that Lawrence’s dress is proof of men’s dominance
over women in the media industry. They based these claims off of the
fact that Lawrence wore a revealing dress in the cold winter-time in
London, while the men in the picture draped themselves in layers of
warm clothing.
However, Lawrence was quick to retaliate against these finger-
pointers, and replied that she chose to wear the clothing, and that she
didn’t want to cover up her beautiful dress with jackets. It seemed, though, that
despite having cleared the air, people still believed that Lawrence was being
oppressed, and made claims that even if she wanted to, it still was uncon-
sciously oppressive.

been a classic spring
break destination for
years. For the Central Baseball program it is
becoming a spring break tradition.
This will be the fourth year that Central is
traveling to Myrtle Beach. The team has stayed
at the Ocean Reef hotel for the past three years,
yet this year they are trying out a new hotel with
an Ocean front view.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is home to the
Ripken Facility. The most exciting part of the
Ripken Experience is that all the fields are mod-
eled after old time baseball stadiums. These
fields are modeled after Ebbets Field, Griffith
Stadium, Crosley Field, and Polo Grounds.

Student activism has dominated news headlines lately with
the Parkland school shooting. Marjory Stoneman Douglas
High School students are pushing for solutions to end gun
violence. Douglas students like David Hogg and Emma Gon-
zalez are leading efforts to promote gun legislation to keep
schools safer. But this is not the first time that students have
stood up to politicians.
During the Vietnam War, anti-war protests began on
college campuses in response to the American government
ordering bombing against North Vietnam. Even though the
anti-war protests were carried out by a minority of Ameri-
cans, including students, powerful figures also joined the
cause. The History Channel notes that Martin Luther King Jr.
opposed the war because he didn’t think it was fair that feder-
al funds were not allocated to domestic programs to help
struggling Americans. King criticized that there was a dispro-
portionate number of African-Americans killed relative to the
total number of Americans killed in the war.
Student activists participated in the Civil Rights move-
ment. Four black students from the North Carolina Agricul-
tural and Technical University sat down at a “white only”
cafe lunch table to protest segregation. This began sit-ins
throughout the country. Without these students helping to put

artists that she looks up to is Mrs.

for drinking water, and 1 dog bowl wa-
ter. That's not a lot compared to what us Amer-
icans use everyday.
There are not many solutions to this terrifying
problem. Many of the locals are using anything
they can to hold the water, although buckets
and cans are out of stock at the stores. So alt-
hough this is a scary problem and approaching
quickly, the residence are preparing for this
“zero” date carefully.
