1. Alliteration- Use of the same consonant at the beginning of each stressed syllable in a line

of verse. The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of the adjacent or

closely connected words. Letters of the alphabet. Ex: Pizza Palace, Tommy’s Toys.

2. Antithesis- A person or a thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else. A

contrast or opposition between two things. A rhetorical or literary device in which an

opposition or contrast of ideas is expressed. Ex: To err is human, to forgive divine. Many

are called but few are chosen.

3. Antonym-A word opposite in meaning to another word. Words that have contrasting

meanings. A word having opposite meaning to that of another word. Ex: On-Off, Left-

Right

4. Assonance- Resemblance of sound between syllables of nearby words , arising

particularly from the rhyming of two or more stressed vowels, but not consonants.

Assonance takes place when two or more words ,close to one another repeat the same

vowel sound , but start with different consonant sounds. Something that is similar

particularly in reference to a sound. Ex: Try to light the fire, It’s hot and it’s monotonous.

5. Atmosphere- The air in any given place. A pervading or surrounding influence or spirit,

general mood or social environment. The gaseous mass surrounding any star. Ex: The

ozone layer, Air and gases contained in a greenhouse.

6. Conflict- A fight or struggle. Collision of moving bodies. Sharp disagreement or

opposition as of interests or ideas. Ex: External conflict, Internal conflict.

7. Euphemism- A polite, vague word or phrase that is used in the place of a word or phrase

that might be considered offensive or unpleasant. A word or phrase substituted. The use of

such terms. Ex: Ethnic cleansing instead of genocide, Passed away instead of died.

8. Hyperbole- Extreme exaggeration or overstatement. Deliberate exaggeration. An instance

or example of this technique. Ex: He’s running faster than wind, This bag weighs a ton.

9. Imagery- Images generally. Mental imaging. Imaging. Ex: He felt like flowers were

waving hello, The pot was as red as a tongue after a cherry flavored ring pop.

10. Innuendo- An indirect or subtle, usually derogatory implication in expression, an

insinuation. A plaintiffs allegation explicating the defamatory meaning of the publication

of utterance in a libel suit. An indirect or suggestive remark. Ex: Marks been spending a

lot of time with Alison if u know what I mean, I’ve found a way to get “extra help “ on the

test.

11. Irony – A method of humorous or subtly sarcastic expression in which the intended

meaning of the words is the direct opposite of their usual sense. 2) The feigning of

ignorance as a tactic in arguments. 3) A combination of circumstances or a result that is

the opposite of what is or might be expected or considered appropriate. Ex: 1)A fire

station burns down. 2) A pilot is afraid of heights.

12. Metaphor – A figure of speech in word or phrase that ordinarily designates on thing is

used to designate another thus making an implicit comparison. 2) One thing concurred as

representing another. 3) A figure of speech containing an implied comparison. Ex: He is a

walking encyclopedia. 2) You are my sunshine.

13. Mood – 1) Mood is a feeling. 2) A predominant or pending feeling, spirit or tone. 3) A

particular state of mind or feeling. Ex: 1) Sad. 2)Happy.

14. Onomatopoeia – 1) A word so formed. 2) The formation of a word by imitation of the

sound made by or associating with its referent. 3) The use of imitative and naturally

suggestive words for rhetorical dramatic or poetic effect. Ex: 1) Honk. 2) Boom.

15. Oxymoron – 1) A figure of speech in which two words with opposing meaning are used

together intentionally. 2) A contradiction of terms. 3) A rhetorical figure in which

incongous or contradictory terms are combined. Ex: Suddenly the room filled with a

silence. 2) The comedian was seriously funny.

16. Paradox – 1) Something that seems unbelievable but may or may not be true. 2) A

statement contrary to common belief. 3) A person, situation, act etc. that seems to have

contradictory and inconsistent qualities. Ex: 1) Save money by spending. 2) Deep down,

you’re really shallow.

17. Personification – 1) Giving human characteristics to non-living things. 2) A personifying

or being personified. 3) A figure of speech in which a thing is represented as a person. Ex:

1) Lightening danced across the sky. 2) The wind howled at night.

18. Pun: 1) A joke making a play on words. 2) A play on words sometimes in different senses

of the same word and sometimes on the similar sense or sound of different words. The use

of a word which is formed or sounded alike in such a way as to juxtapose, correct or bring

two or more of the possible applications of the word or words, usually in a humorous way.

Ex: 1) A chicken farmer’s favorite car is a coupe. 2) A boiled egg every morning is hard to

beat.

19. Plot – 1) The main story of a tale. 2) A plot is defined as a secret plan to achieve

something illegal or evil. 3) The definition of a plot is a marked off area that is intended

for a specific use. Ex: 1) John likes basketball. He wasn’t on a team or very good but a

coach saw his potential and decided to train him to become the best. 2) Kaithlin wants a

puppy. She goes to the pound looking for a dog who she connected with. She found one

with a while spot on his nose. They go home together.

20. Sarcasm – 1) Mocking humor or the use of irony to make a joke. 2) The making of such

remarks. 3) Their characteristic quality. Ex: 1) That’s just what I needed today!. 2) Well

what a surprise.

21. Simile – 1) A figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared. 2) A

figure of speech in which one thing is likened to another, dissimilar thing by the use of

like or as. 3) Where two unlike things are compared using like or as. Ex: 1) He is as

hungry as a horse. 2) He is as quiet as a mouse.

22. Symbolism – 1) The practice of giving special meaning to objects. 2) A system of

symbols. 3) Symbolic meaning. Ex: 1) The dove is a symbol of peace. 2) Black is a

symbol that represents evil or death.

23. Synonym – 1) A word that means the same or nearly the same thing as another word. 2)

Metonym. 3) An incorrect taxonomic name. Ex: 1) instance, case. 2) specimen, sample.

24. Theme – 1) A topic, a recurring idea or a short melody. 2) A topic or subject of a lecture,

essay etc. A short melody used as the subject of a musical composition. Ex: 1) Good vs

evil. 2) Coming of age.

25. Tone – 1) Tone means to soften or reduce, particularly in artistic terms. 2) Tone is the

quality or implied meaning of something said. 3) Sound in terms of its quality, pitch origin

or power. Ex: 1) Cautious. 2) Sarcastic.
