Higgins’ Class reached the regional finals of the
St. Philomena’s N.S.
Convent Road, Tullamore.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here are some of the activities that have taken place lately.
1st May: Well done to our soccer team for participating in the
Mid-Leinster finals in Portlaoise. The girls played really well and
we are very proud of them. Thanks to the parents that came
along on the day to lend their support and to Ms. Buckley for
accompanying the team.
3rd May: The Parents’ Association organised a
sponsored Fun Run/Walk in the Town Park. It was a
great morning and the girls made a huge effort to
complete 5km. A total of €2770.23 was raised. Many
thanks to all the parents that helped out that morning
and to everyone that sponsored the girls.
The Tesco Community Support Fund donated €302.23 to our
school. We thank them for their generosity.
14th May: Ms Marron’s Class went on their school tour to the
Ombudsman’s Office and Jumpzone.
Irish Aid awards in Limerick. 5 representatives went to Mary
Immaculate College where they got the opportunity to showcase
all the hard work they had put in to their project. Well done
girls. Thanks to Ms. Higgins and Orla for accompanying the girls.
20th May: All classes went to O’ Brien Park for a fitness test
organised by Offaly Sports Partnership.
21st May: We presented Ronan
Scully from Self Help Africa
with a cheque for €630. The
money was raised during our
Lenten campaign and will go
towards helping malnourished
children. We also presented his
father with our school mascot Buttercup which will also be
brought to Africa. Thanks to Aisling, Ashanti, Emilie and Katie
for knitting our mascot and to Ms. O’ Meara and Ms. Gaffey for
organising the initiative.
22nd May: We were thrilled that our camogie
team reached the final of the Cumann na
mBunscol camogie competition against
Ballinamere. They gave a fantastic
performance on the day and never gave up but
unfortunately it was not our day. Thank you to Ms. Marron, Ms.
O’ Meara and Ms. Lee for training the team.
Ms. Higgins and the Green Schools Committee
organised a poetry competition based on the theme
of water conservation. They were very impressed
with the high standard of entries. The winners were
Aoife Kavanagh from Ms. Heaslip’s Class and Katie O’ Connor
from Ms. Gaffey’s Class.
31st May: The girls in Third and Fourth Class went on their
school tour to Turoe Pet Farm. They had a very enjoyable day.
Thanks to Molly Dillane’s mam, Paula, for helping out on the day.
As a reward for all of their hard work with Irish Aid, Ms.
Higgins’ Class attended an Irish Aid workshop in Dublin.
Thank you to the Parents’ Association for
once again funding hanging baskets for our
school. They look beautiful and add a vibrant
splash of colour to the front of the building.
We received funding from the Credit Union Community Support
Fund and from the Parents’ Association to purchase a school
vegepod. The Gardening Club have been very busy planting fruit
and vegetables and we can’t wait to see how well everything
grows. Thank you to Sarah Daly’s dad, Raymond, for donating
bags of clay for our flower beds.
School Self-Evaluation
This year we have been focusing on improving Oral Language
throughout the school by linking oral language with writing
genres e.g. when narrative writing is taught, the pupils engage in
story telling, when persuasive writing is taught, the pupils take
part in debates. We will continue with this process next year.
The girls have also been working on developing mental Maths
strategies and the ability to see that there is more than one
way to solve a Maths problem. This will be further developed
next year.
In September, we will be developing our digital learning plan and
we are looking for your input. A short survey will issue soon and
we would appreciate your contributions.
School Uniforms
We are looking for school uniforms in good condition. If your
daughter is outgrowing her uniform and you would like to donate
it to the school, you may do so just before the holidays.
