STC Withstand Calculation

The document provides a formula for calculating the cross-sectional area of bare conductors needed to withstand thermal stresses from short duration high currents. The formula uses the current value, material type, time duration, and temperature rise. As an example, it calculates that for a 25kA current over 1 second using aluminum, the required cross-sectional area is 219.22 square mm, and the provided busbar of 600 square mm is suitable.

METHOD OF CALCULATING THE CROSS SECTIONAL AREA OF BARE CONDUCTORS

WITH REGARD TO THERMAL STRESSES DUE TO CURRENT (25KA) OF SHORT
DURATION (1 SEC).

The following formula can be used to calculate the cross section of bare
conductors necessary to withstand the thermal stress due to currents with duration of the
order of 0.2 s to 5 s as per IEC standard

S = (I/α)*√(t/∆Ø)

Where:

S is the cross section, in square milli meters

I is the R.M.S value of the current in amperes.

α is expressed in (A/sq.mm) √(s/K) and has the following values:

13 for copper

8.5 for aluminium

4.5 for iron

2.5 for lead.

t is time in seconds.

Ư is the temperature rise in (K) for bare conductors, it is normally 180K.

If the time is more than 2 sec but less than 5 sec, the value for Ư may be increased in
same formula to 215K.

S = (25000 / 8.5) * √ (1/180)

S =219.22 sqmm

The required cross section of main busbar is 219.22Sq.mm & the provided cross section
is 600sq.mm (50x12mm ALU) for 25kA for 1sec. Hence main busbar selected is suitable
for use in the specified conditions.
