AGMA 422.02 - Practice for Helical and Herringbone Gear Speed Reducers for Oilfield
Pumping Units

1/15
All pumping units are manufactured under quality assurance program in accordance with:
API Spec. Q1 - Specification for Quality Program
ISO 9001 - Quality System - Model for Quality Assurance in Design, Development,
Production, Installation and Servicing.
Each Unit consists of: Skid Base with lifting eyes, with Gear Reducer Support welded on unit
base(item 1 ), Samson Post (item 2), Double Reduction Gear Reducer incorporating Herringbone (Helical)
Symmetrically Positioned Gears and using an Oil Bath Lubrication System with an Pipe Oil Gauge
indicating oil level (item 11), Walking Beam (item 3), Horse Head with Swiveling Device to move right
horse head (item 4), Cranks (item 10), Adjustable Counterweights for the required counterbalance (item
15), Crank Pin Bearings (item 9), Center Bearing (item 8), Equalizer (item 6), Equalizer Bearing (item 5),
Brake and Brake Control System (item 12), Pitmans (item 7), Carrier Bar and Wire Line assy.(item 13),
Motor Base with Slide Rails for the Prime Mover (item 14), "V-ee" Belts, Belts Cover (item 18), Samson
Post Ladders with Safety Platforms (item 16), Fence (item17), Reducer Support Ladder (item 19), Reducer
Sheave for desired speed.
The units are supplied with special non standard wrenches and with standard metric sized
wrenches.
The non -corroding protection of the unprocessed outer surfaces is done by applying a coat of
oxidation preventive primer and paint adequate to environmental climate. The surfaces are sandblast
cleaned.

Main features of "Vulcan" conventional pumping units:

1. Skid Base with Hi-Prime bracket for electric motor. The skid base can be set on a concrete block.
The pad on which is to be set must be leveled and stabilized first.

2/15
2. Double reduction herringbone gear reducer designed as per API Spec. 11E & monogrammed, of
rugged construction, with large factors of safety.
The gear box housing is made
of cast iron, stress relieved, two
pieces design, with depth ribs and
large continuous bearing bosses to
ensure maximum support for gear
elements and rotating counterweights.
All gears are precision cut
herringbone gears and all shafts are
forged from high alloy steel, heat
treated and precision ground. Gears
are operating in the oil bath of the
gear box and the lubricating system is
provided with special wipers and
grooves, for a positive feed
lubrication of bearings. The high
speed pinion and intermediate pinions
are housed in individual bearing
carriers that can be removed from the
main gear housing. Labyrint seals are
provided on motor shaft and main
shaft for maximum oil retention and
wear free life.

3. Using a screw type mechanism system, the motor can slide along the center line as well as
perpendicular to the center line of the pumping unit, to facilitate easy motor alignment and desired tension
to the belts.

4. Crank which provide different stroke lengths, as specified in "GENERAL DATA", with
following features:
-graduated scales on both sides, for ensuring an accurate balancing of the unit with
counterweigts.
-slots enabling the counterweights to slide along the crank for accurate positioning, with
the help of counterweight adjustment pinion.
-crank designed to restrict the end travel of counterweights.

3/15
5. Weights with proper arrangement for lifting, placing, sliding and fitting on crank.

6. All structural bearings, i.e. center bearing,

equalizer bearing & crank pin bearing, are properly seated in
cast steel housing and are provided with self-aligning roller
bearings which diminish the risk of mounting errors.
An adequate tapering at the contact area of the
pitman arm & crank pin bearing and also between the crank
arm & crank pin is provided in order to facilitate an easy
dismounting.

7. The samson post has provision for minor

adjustment of the walking beam with respect to well center,
so that center of the carrier bar can be aligned with the center
of the well head exactly. In the middle portion of the samson
post top four elongated elliptical holes are provided, through
which walking beam is fixed to the center bearing and the
position of the walking beam can be adjusted with ease in
operation along with center bearing.

8.Ladders with platforms are provided on both sides of samson post, leading to center bearing, for
ease in installation and safety of the working personnel. Long tie-rods are also provided on one sides of the
walking beam, to ensure safety of working personnel.

9. Horse head hinged to walking beam can be swiveled to the

left side of the walking beam by means of a worm gear device.
Swiveling can be safety done from the Samson Post Platform.
The distance between the pivot point to the tangent point is within the
API tolerances.

10. Brake assembly of drum and shoe type, with proper

locking arrangement to keep the brake locked in engaged or
disengaged position.

11. Carrier bar is suitable for holding 1½" API polished

rod, with adjustable polished rod position.

12 .Clear markings are provided on the structural members,

for centering of the unit with well center.

4/15
13. Crank fitted on the output shaft of reducer is fixed and supported by fabricated brackets,
which ensure reducer, brake, cranks and reducer sheave as one single sub-assembly for supply in the
form of ckd assembly at site.

14.Belt cover assembly acts as a cover for prime mover and gear reducer sheave and belts while
in operation. Doors are provided at the gear reducer and the prime mover side, in order to permit the
changing of sheaves easily.

15. Unit is sand blasted and coated with one coat of inorganic zinc primer followed by two
finish coats of synthetic enamel paint. Black is the normal color offered, but any other color shade is
available if specified.

16. All units offered are new and unused.

17.A name plate bearing the following information is provided with each unit:
A. Name of manufacturer.
B. Model number.
C. Year of manufacture.
D. Serial number.
E. Torque capacity.
F. Maximum polished road load.
G. Stroke lengths.

18. Fasteners of the most of the ckd assembly are supplied fitted with the corresponding assemblies
and rest of the fasteners are supplied separately, with identification tags, in one box for each unit.

Inspection Procedure is carried out according to the "Vulcan Quality Assurance Program", which is
in accordance with API Spec. Q1 and ISO 9001.
