THE CRY AWOKE BALINTAWAK

"Freedom" (full) All:
The cry awoke Balintawak, All the people raised to cry,
And the echoes answered back; Fearing not to bleed or die;
"Freedom!" (fading away) All the tombs of slave and sire
All the four winds listened long Broke to voice and great desire;
To the shrieking of that song; Up the mountain, down the plain
Every poet struck his lyre (rising, then falling)
With those burning notes of fire; Lounder, lounder rang the
strain, (increasing volume)
Girls: "Freedom!" (ringing)
All the women knelt to pray
In their hearts that frenzied lay. Each a solo line spoken with
assurance:
Boys: I heard it from the makers of the
E'en the children and the old brooms;
Took to arms and shouted I heard it from the weavers at their
bold, (increasing volume) looms;
"Freedom!" I heard it in the smoking smithy
Each a solo line spoken with rooms.
assurance: I heard it in the bullet's whine at
I heard it from the planters in the roars;
vales I heard it in the farthest islet shore.
I heard it from the traders tying bales;
I heard it where the fishers strike
All:
their sails--
We heard it and shall hear it
I heard it from the huskers 'neath the
evermore!
trees;
"Freedom!" (full)
I heard it from the drivers of the seas,
The cry of Balintawak,
I heard it from the pounders in the
And now our voices answer back--
leas.
"Freedom!" (joyously full)
