1 Product Introduction

1.1 Product Positioning

The SmartAX MA5694/MA5698 Multi-service Access Module (MA5694/MA5698 for short)
is an optical network unit (ONU) developed by Huawei.
The MA5694/MA5698 supports GPON and GE upstream transmission and applies to fiber to
the mobile base station (FTTM) scenarios.

1.2 Network Application

As an access device for base station radio backhaul, the MA5694/MA5698 connects to a base
station through the E1, GE, or FE port and to an upper-layer device through the upper-layer
network, implementing private line access of base stations. The MA5694 can be connected to
a base station only through the GE port.
Figure 1-1,Figure 1-2 and Figure 1-3 show the networking diagrams of the MA5694/MA5698
for implementing private line access of base stations.

Switching

 The MA5694/MA5698 receives base station data services through a GE port.

 The MA5694/MA5698 transmits the data upstream to an IP or MPLS network through a
GE or 10GE port on the optical line terminal (OLT) and then to the BSC.

 The MA5698 receives the time division multiplexing (TDM) data of a base station
through an E1 port, encapsulates the TDM data, and sends the data upstream to the OLT
in TDM over Ethernet (TDMoE) mode.
 The MA5698 transmits the data upstream to an IP or MPLS network through a GE or

 The MA5698 receives the TDM data of a base station through an E1 port, encapsulates
the TDM data, and sends the data upstream to the OLT through GPON in native TDM
mode. Any E1 port on the E81A board can be used for simulating the TDM service.

In native TDM mode, TDM frames are encapsulated in GPON encapsulation mode (GEM) frames in
TDMoGEM mode. This mode features simple encapsulation, small network overhead, and good link
quality.
 The OLT sends TDM signals to the SDH network through an E1 or STM-1 port and then
to the BSC.

1.3 Product Features

This topic describes the features of the MA5694/MA5698.

2.1.4 Heat Dissipation

In addition to supporting high-density user access, the MA5694 uses an optimal ventilation
design to implement passive heat dissipation, and the MA5698 uses an optimal ventilation
design to implement air-cooling heat dissipation.

Heat Dissipation of the MA5694

 When the MA5694 is horizontally installed, no air channel is available and the device
uses passive heat dissipation.
 When the MA5694 is vertically installed, cool air flows into the device from the bottom
and hot air flows out of the device from the top.
The MA5694 supporting passive heat dissipation has the following advantages:

Product Description 2 Product Hardware

 Fewer noises.
 Lower device fault ratio and maintenance costs, because the MA5694 does not require a
fan (fans are low-reliability components).
 Energy efficiency.

Heat Dissipation of the MA5698

Two fans are embedded on the left side in the MA5698 to blow air for heat dissipation. The
ventilation mode used in the MA5698 is as follows: Cool air flows into the device from the
left side, and the fans blow the air through boards and exhaust hot air out of the device from
the right side.
Figure 2-7 shows the ventilation mode of the MA5698.

Figure 2-7 Ventilation mode of the MA5698

The fan speed of the MA5698 can be automatically or manually adjusted. The temperature
sensor configured through the control board detects the temperature and automatically adjusts
the fan speed.
The MA5698 fans support 6-level speed adjustment, and support alarm reporting in case of
fan blocking.

Overview
The E81A board is an E1 interface board used for accessing E1 signals. It provides eight E1
ports and is hot swappable.
The E81A board provides eight channels of E1 access services, and its data is directly
transmitted from the source synchronous SMII (S3MII) interface of the logic module to the
control board for processing.
Figure 2-24 shows the external connections of the E81A board.

4 Operation and Maintenance

4.1 Management Using the CLI

You can use the command line interface (CLI) to log in to the MA5694/MA5698 by means of
the serial port or optical line terminal (OLT) and to manage and maintain the device.
Figure 4-1 shows an example network of MA5694/MA5698 management using the CLI.

Figure 4-1 MA5694/MA5698 management using the CLI

4.2 Management Using the U2000

You can manage and maintain optical network units (ONUs) using the iManager U2000
network management system (U2000).
The U2000 provides abundant management functions including the following: security
management, topology management, alarm management, performance management,
inventory resources management, log management, database management, network element
(NE) communication parameter management, NE software management, report management,
and system monitoring.
The U2000 communicates with ONUs using the Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) and supports inband and outband management modes. Figure 4-2 shows an example
network of ONU management using the U2000.

 Inband network management mode: In this mode, the interaction messages between the
U2000 and an ONU are transmitted over the service channel of the ONU and no
additional device is required. This mode is cost-effective and supports flexible
networking. However, the maintenance operations cannot be performed if the device
service channel becomes faulty.
 Outband network management mode: In this mode, the interaction messages between the
U2000 and an ONU are transmitted through a non-service channel. This mode provides a
more reliable device management channel. When a fault occurs on the device, users can
use the dedicated management channel to locate the fault and monitor the device in real
time. This mode requires an additional device to provide a management channel that is
independent of the device service channel.
