Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE2.MD.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set
with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems10-using
information presented in a bar graph.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Selected Technology Tool: Excel

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Excel will and can support the students in this specific lesson and the
content being addressed because the lesson is about graphing. The teacher can lead as a demonstration, but
the students can input values into Excel and then it will make them a graph. They will represent the standards
being addressed, express it with the graph, and then engage by creating their own graph.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will demo the lesson for the students by walking them through
excel. The lesson will be introduced with a hook question, such as “how many of you ride the bus to school?”
The lesson should take about 30 minutes total. The student learning will be assessed through the accuracy,
such as correct labels, axis, and values of the graph.
The lesson can be differentiated by changing topics and making different types of graphs, such as bar, line,
and pie. Having them look at a completed graph and work backwards to answer questions about the data can
extend student learning. The lesson will be concluded with a discussion by asking the students what they
learned and where else besides math they can use graphs and excel. Feedback will be given to the students
on their graphs.
Reflective Practice: I feel student-learning can be impacted through this lesson by seeing it in Excel and then
doing it on their own. The lesson can be extended to outside of class by having the students observe around
them and make data and make a graph on their own. Other technology tools that can be used in this lesson
are power point and smart boards.
