PROMOTING YOUNG MUSICIANS ON INTERNATIONAL MUSIC DAY

AND INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DRUG ABUSE AND TRAFICKING

INTRODUCTION:
Network for Human and Social Development are working in the field of Disaster management, Health, Women
Empowerment since 2005. We are registered with Social Welfare Department, ICT Islamabad under VSW 1961 and
Pakistan Center for Philanthropy. We have worked with 40 national and international organization including; USAID,
UNFPA, Malteser International etc.

NHSD has been working in the thematic area of Women Empowerment and Gender Empowerment and has
established 50 Vocational Training Centers providing employment to Youth all over Pakistan. We feel that young
performing artists of Pakistan that are part of a unique niche art or culture, require certain funded and non-funded
aid and encouragement as well.

NEED ASSESSMENT:
International Music Day is celebrated every year to highlight the contributions made by music to the
artistic community. Music is an essential tool to vent ones energies towards positive creative talent it also
helps mental cognition and is a peaceful way to protest against an acrimonious environment. This year
we aim to celebrate this day by promoting young artists mainly local rock, blues and classical musicians of
Pakistan.

Simultaneously we will also be celebrating International day of Drug Abuse and trafficking through
promoting music. Our aim being to prevent drug abuse amongst the youth of Pakistan,

Since the 90s metal music has been very influential in Pakistan starting with the Band Junoon, which is
Asia’s largest Sufi rock band and other bands like Vital Signs which sung patriotic songs for the youth. After
the early 2000s there were many young musicians that were inspired by that patriotism and passion. At
present There are a plethora of families that are or were directly or indirectly involved with promoting
rock music in Pakistan. These performing artists have been performing since they were in there teens and
have been instrumental in promoting this performing art, to the extent that it has become a culture now.
These families are currently working in full job time jobs and performing the art that they love at the same
time, whenever it is possible to do so.
Rock music, a genre influenced by the blues rock era of the 60s and 70s, developed in the 80s involving;
fast guitar shredding, blast beat drumming and varying styles of playing the major and minor pentatonic
scale, has a unique almost noisy sound; which is why it tends to get unnoticed by mainstream music sellers
and the media. The music involves usage of the Pentatonic Scale and the type of instruments i.e. mainly
guitars, drums and bass, similar to blues rock. The difference between blues and metal however lies in the
advancement in Music technology at the time, mainly the amplification of the sound of the instruments
involved. This amplification allowed for the emotions of the musician to be passed onto the audience
through music.

Since EMI records closed down there has been limited access for these bands to perform live before an
audience. Since this particular performing art is one that is difficult for mainstream audiences to
understand, the number of rock and metal concerts has decreased sizably. There have been attempts by
Nescafe Basement and Coke Studios to keep the heritage alive, however they mostly promote music that
falls under the “Popular” Genre rather than the “Metal” and “Rock” Genre.

Owing to this, the metal culture and artists that fall within this culture have not able to reach out to the
wider audience and their only means of promoting their art is through social media websites; bandcamp,
facebook etc.
