15. The following table shows few elements of the Modern Periodic table: 3
Li Be B C N O F
Na Mg Al Si P S Cl
K Br
From these elements, answer the following with reasons:
i) Out of Na and K, which element has larger atomic size and why?
ii) Which element has highest metallic character in first row of elements and
why?
iii) Which elements belong to alkali metals?
Ans. i) K has larger atomic size as we move down a group, atomic size increases. 0.5+0.5
ii) Li has highest metallic character as metallic character decreases while
moving across left to 0.5+0.5
right in a period.
iii) Li, Na and K as these belong to Group I of the periodic table. 1

17. a) The following table shows few elements of the Modern Periodic table : 5
H He
Li Be B C N O F Ne
Na Mg Al Si P S Cl Ar
Using this table, explain why
i) Atomic size of Mg is less than that of Na.
ii) Fluorine is more reactive than chlorine.
iii) Li and Na are considered as metals.
b) Why did Mendeleev leave some gaps in his periodic table?
c) In Mendeleev’s table, why there was no mention of noble gases like helium,
neon, argon?
Ans. a) i) As we move from left to right in a period, effective nuclear size increases. 1
Therefore, size of atom decreases on going from left to right in a period.
ii) Fluorine being smaller in size can hold the electron gained more easily than 1
chlorine. Therefore, it is more reactive than chlorine.
iii) Li and Na have one electron in the valence shell. Both these elements tend to 1
lose electrons. That is why, they are considered as metals.
b) Mendeleev left some gaps in his periodic table because he believed that 1
certain elements existed but not discovered at that time.
c) There was no mention of noble gases as these were not discovered at that
1
time.
