Ans. a) i) As we move from left to right in a period, effective nuclear size increases. 1
Therefore, size of atom decreases on going from left to right in a period.
ii) Fluorine being smaller in size can hold the electron gained more easily than 1
chlorine. Therefore, it is more reactive than chlorine.
iii) Li and Na have one electron in the valence shell. Both these elements tend to 1
lose electrons. That is why, they are considered as metals.
b) Mendeleev left some gaps in his periodic table because he believed that 1
certain elements existed but not discovered at that time.
c) There was no mention of noble gases as these were not discovered at that

time.
