(a) Give the cathode and anode reaction for the electrolysis of sodium sulphate solution
using platinum electrodes.
(b) Calculate the oxidation number of chlorine for each of the following compounds.
(i) NaClO4 (ii) KClO4
5. Answer All questions. (16 marks)
(a) An element E contains 2 electrons in K shell, 8 electrons in L shell and 2 electrons in
M shell.
Answer the following.
(i) The complete electronic structure
(ii) The group number
(iii) The chief valence and
(iv) The name of the element E.
(b) An electric current is passed in turn through solutions of silver nitrate and
copper(II)sulphate in series. If 5.4 g of silver is deposited at the cathode of the first cell
calculate the mass of copper deposited in the second cell. (Ag=108, Cu=63)
(c) Balance the following redox reactions using either oxidation number method or ion
electron (half reaction) method.

6. Answer All questions. (16 marks)
(a) 6g of a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium chloride were made up to 500 cm 3 of
solution. 25 cm3 of this solution required 20 cm3 of 0.1 M sulphuric acid for
neutralization. Calculate the mass of sodium chloride in the salt mixture. (C=12, O=16,
Na=23)
(b) How many cubic centimetres of 1 M hydrochloric acid must be diluted with water to
make 1.5 dm3 of 0.25 M solution? If 25 cm3 of sodium hydroxide neutralizes 22 cm3 of
this diluted solution, what is the molarity of sodium hydroxide solution? (H=1, O=16,
Na=23, Cl= 35)
