Accelerators

1 General Information
Accelerators are primarily used in cement slurry designs to shorten the thickening (setting) time and
to assist in rapid compressive strength development to optimize Waiting on Cement (WOC) time
after its placement. However, accelerators generally do not impact long term compressive strengths
of cement slurries.
Accelerators are usually required at low temperature applications. Some accelerators are also used
to impart secondary effects on cement slurry, such as
 Counteracting retardation
 Stabilizing cement slurry
 Reducing free fluid
 Preventing formation damage
 Inducing thixotropic properties

2 Summary of Accelerators
Types of accelerators and their typical properties are given in the table below:

3 Note on Compatibility
Laboratory testing is required to verify product synergy and that the
Note intended results are achieved

A-3L + A-7L are incompatible and when combined can typically produce precipitates (reference
FlowGuard™). However, historical exceptions have been shown. If proper laboratory testing on
both the mix water and cement slurry are carried out and no incompatibility results are
produced, Sodium Silicate (A-3L) and Calcium Chloride (A-7L) can be used in the same cement
slurry.
