More than 80 percent of students misinterpreted “sponsored content” as a real news

story. Many people say that it is the consumer’s fault for believing fake news. I believe that
there should be regulations and consequences for publishing fake news because it could
change someone’s opinions or earn money that is not deserved. While fake news does make
money it may also change someone’s opinion based on false news.
To begin with, there should be regulations and consequences for publishing fake news
because it change someone’s opinion based on false facts. An example of this is “Before last
month’s presidential election, more than, Facebook users promoted articles that claimed
Hollywood star Tom hanks was voting for Donald Trump. Hank’s was actually voting for Hillary
Clinton.” (Websites) The author is saying that people voted for Donald Trump because they had
the wrong information and thought that Tom Hanks was voting for him as well. That is part of
the reason why there should be regulations on fake news.
Another reason that there should be regulations and consequences on publishing fake
news is that it earns money from deceiving people. An example of this is “Every 1,000 visitors
earns you at least a dollar or two through banner ads sold through Google.” (Websites) This
says how easy it is to get ads on a website. If someone publishes fake news they can have ads
and they can get money from drawing in views weather the viewer believes the news is real or
not. That is another reason there should be regulations and consequences on publishing fake
news.
One thing people might say is that people have been using fake news sense the time of
Colonial America so it must be fine. While it is true that people where using fake news sense
Colonial America that doesn’t make it okay. Here is an example “Franklin composed a fake
letter from a real person, naval hero John Paul Jones.” (Fake) Ben Franklin Composed a sstory
where he composed a fake letter from John Paul Jones. As a naval hero John Paul Jones should
not have been written about in that context. That is why we need regulations and
consequences even though fake news has been around sense Colonial America.
Many people think that fake news is actually real. Citizens can get false information
from fake news that can then make them change what they think. Fake news has been around
sense Colonial America and it was causing trouble even then. Fake news need to be regulated
because it can affect how people think and the money people earn.
