CHAPLAIN’S REPORT
by Tom Fortenberry

A REBEL BEFORE A YANK

Born in Arkansas in the year 1842, William Jackson Smart
enlisted in the Confederate Army. In a war that would tear a
nation apart for four long years, only God would know the
coming events that would help to join a nation together
again. In one such event at the battle of Pea Ridge in 1862 ,
Smart was captured by Union forces. History records that
Smart decided to join the Union forces rather than spend
days and possible years in a POW Camp. So he enlisted in Members of the Magnolia Rifles demonstrating field practices at the 2019 Brandon
the UnionArmy. Civil War Relic Show.

After the War of Aggression, William Jackson Smart

resettled in Arkansas and then later sold his land and moved
his family to Spokane, Washington. Married twice and
widowed twice, Smart resettled his family. In 1909 Smart’s
daughter, Sonora one of 14 children attended a special
church service in Spokane, Washington where the family
had moved to years before. Sonora remembered that when
she was 16 her mother died. Sonora related that after her
mother’s death, her father, William Jackson Smart became Officers being sworn in at the 124th Annual SCV Mississippi Division Reunion.

both a father and mother to her and the other children. In

1910 Sonora Smart Dodd submitted a request to honor the
service, courage, and devotion of her father and others to
the church and city officials. Smarts daughter, Sonora
wanted to honor her dad on his birthday, but due to the lack
of sufficient time it was decided by church officials to use
the date of June 19 th so sufficient time could be arranged
for the request. As time passed in large measure to Sonora’s
effort to honor her dad, the city, State of Washington and
later President Woodrow Wilson came to Spokane to
recognized her effort to honored her dad.

In 1919 Wilson Jackson Smart died. He was a Rebel and a Montgomery VA Hospital in Jackson, MS.
Yank. He lived when a nation was divided and left us with a
nation unified. Years and generations later after a War that
had divided men, women, families, and friend was now
joined together in celebration of fathers and mothers.

In 1972, six years before Sonora Smart Dodd’s death at the

age of 96, President Richard Nixon signed into effect by
Congressional resolution declaring the third Sunday in June
to honor William Jackson Smart and all fathers to be a day
of honor. Happy Fathers Day.

May God Bless each of you.

Mary Ann Forrest Chapter of the Order of Confederate Rose

What a month June was!! The OCR Tea and Division Reunion ran like a well oiled machine. We could not have accomplished this huge
undertaking without the ladies of the Mary Ann Forrest OCR. Everyone worked together and did their part and I’m extremely pleased at the
many compliments we received from the attendees.

The Mary Ann Forrest OCR also received a Resolution from the Mississippi Division SCV for being an integral part of the fabric of civic
life in both Brandon and Rankin County, praise for showing strong support for other community servants, and playing a superlative part in
making the Mississippi Division, SCV, and Mississippi Society OCR a wonderful success. I mean what could be better!!

This Chapter is humbled at the outpouring of support we receive on a daily basis and we hope to continue well into the future so that our
children and our children’s children never forget what we stand for.

Thank you all for your part in making the OCR great again!!

ADJUTANT’S REPORT
by Charles Lewis

"A land without memories is a people without Liberty." –Robert E. Lee

Forty six people signed in at the June meeting. Rabi Tom opened the meeting with prayer. Tim Cupit called the meeting to order. Steve
Lampkin made a motion the minutes from the May meeting be accepted. Ian Powell second the motion and with no discussion they were
approved.

With the reunion and relic show being only one week away, we opted not to have a speaker. Last minute updates were given on the final
preparations for the upcoming weekend. James Williams and Charla Lewis gave reports on the Trail of Honor Turkey shoot. Thanks to those
who worked the Adopt a Highway cleanup. Nicholas Foster and Jon St.Clare were voted in as Camp 265 members. The "pass the hat" took in
$77.00.

Seven AM Friday, June 6th setup for the reunion and relic show began. With all hands on deck and working as a team, we soon began checking
in and setting up vendors. At 3:00 PM reunion registration began. As a whole everything went smoothly and Charla and I registered around 300
men. Six PM the President's reception began. The colors were presented and after the food was blessed, dinner was served. Commander Cupit
presented the camp commander's awards. Four "Going Beyond the Call of Duty" awards were given. They went to Jamie Hamblin, Robbie
Lewis, Dave Adcox, and Larry Eubanks. Mr. Tom Lilly received the first ever "Transportation Award" for his willingness to make sure some
camp members have a way of getting to meetings, events, etc. Jeremy Bowling, Jon St.Clare, and Nicholas Foster received their SCV
membership certificates, and to top the evening off Larry Eubanks was presented a True Grandson medal and certificate.

Saturday morning, June 8th Commander Cupit called the reunion to order. The colors were presented and Al Arnold opened the session with
prayer.

Fourth brigade officers were elected. Louis Foley was elected brigade commander and Chris Merck was elected councilman.

At the completion of Mississippi Division and Beauvoir business the memorial to the unknown soldier began. Upon leaving the meeting each
person in attendance and the OCR ladies dropped a white rose at the tomb of the unknown soldier guarded by reenactors Jeremy Quarshie and
Jonas Patrick.
Mourners, Charla Lewis, Jamie Hamblin, and Robin Pitts looked on. Amazing Grace, played on bagpipes echoed throughout City Hall as the
memorial took place.

After a break for everyone to enjoy the relic show, we reconvened at 6:00 PM Saturday night for the banquet. Special thanks to the OCR ladies
for serving. Prime rib or grilled chicken with all the trimmings was on the menu. After the presentation of Division awards and the swearing in
of new officers, Rabi Tom Fortenberry concluded the reunion with prayer.

Sunday, June 9th it was back for the relic show. About 2,000 people attended the show this year. The day went smoothly, and before you
realized it the show was over. Four o'clock and clean up began. We had the vendors out and clean up done in record time this year. Again
thanks for all the help and a BIG thank you to Andrea Cupit and Danny Britt for all the hours of behind the scene prep work they put in
preparing for the weekend.

On Tuesday, June 11th Larry Eubanks, Vernon Hearn, Chris Merck, and I helped the OCR ladies deliver my pickup truck's bed and my wife's
SUV's trunk, back floorboard and back seat full of groceries to the V.A. Freedom Food Bank. These ladies continue to make our camp look
good!

I know you get tired seeing this but .... Dues are now due. Mail them to ME:
