PLATE NO.

1 – FLEXURAL ANALYSIS OF BEAMS

Instructions:
1. Solve the following problems.
2. Write the solutions legibly.
3. Write your solution in a long bond paper substance 20 with a margin of 1 inch on all sides.
4. Submit this on Monday, July 1, 2019. Late assignments will not be accepted.

1. Compute the allowable resisting moment in kN-m of the section shown

using transformed area if f’c = 1600 psi, fs = f’s = 24000 psi, and n = 9.
Solve this using SI Unit. Convert all necessary data.

2. A rectangular beam has the dimension of b = 250mm, h = 625mm and d = 575 mm and is
reinforced with three-25 mm diameter bars. Assuming f’c = 28 MPa, the tensile strength in
bending (modulus of rupture) is 3325 kPa and the yield point of the steel fy is 414 MPa.
Determine the stress caused by a bending moment M = 61 kN-m using the transformed
area.

3. Compute the flexural stresses in the concrete and steel

for the beams shown using the transformed-area
method.

4. Determine the safest allowable weight that a beam can

carry if fy = 60,000 psi and f ‘c = 4000 psi. Weight of
normal-weight concrete is 150 lb/ft3.
