PROBLEM SET NO. 1

1. A rectangular beam reinforced for tension oly has b=300mm, d=490 mm. the tension
steel area provided is 4500 mm2. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of the beam in
kNm. Assume fc’=27MPa, fy=275 MPa.
2. A rectangular beam has b=300mm, d=500mm, As=3-25 mm, fc’=34.2 MPa, grade 60
reinforcement (fy=414 MPa). Calculate the design moment Mu.
3. A rectangular beam with b=250mm and d=460mm is reinforced for tension only with 3-
35mm bars. The beam is simply supported over a span of 6 m and carries a uniform
dead load of 680 N/m including its own weight. Calculate the uniform live load that the
beam van carry. Assume fy=276.5MPa and fc’=20.7MPa.
4. A rectangular beam has b=300mm, d=500mm, As=6-32mm, fc’=27.6MPa, grade 60
reinforcement (fy=414 MPa). Calculate the ultimate moment capacity of the beam.
5. A rectangular beam reinforced for tension only has b=300mm, d=490mm. The tension
steel area provided is 7-25mm diameter bars with fy=415 MPa, fc’=231 MPa. Calculate
the ultimate moment capacity of the beam.
6. A rectangular beam has b=300mm and d=480mm. the beam is used to carry a factored
moment of 18kN-m. Assume fc’=27.6 MPa and fy=276 MPa. Calculate the required steel
area.
7. Design a rectangular beam for a 10-m simple span to support a dead load of 18 kN/m
(not including its own weight) and a live load of 24 kN/m. Use fc’=21 MPa, and fy=276
MPa. Assume weight of concrete is 23.5 kN/m3.
8. Design a rectangular beam reinforced for tension only to carry a dead load moment of
150kNm and a live load of 140 kNm. Fc’=20.7MPa, fy=414 MPa. Use 65 mm steel
covering.
9. A reinforced rectangular beam has a width of 350mm having a simple span of 6m. it
carries a dead load moment (including its own weight) of 100kNm, a live load moment of
140 kNm and a moment due to the effect of earthquake of 118 kNm. If fc’=20.7 and
fy=414 MPa, determine:
a. The design moment
b. The effective depth of the beam
c. The number of 25mm bars needed for reinforcement.
10. Design a simply supported beam 0.2m and 4.50 m long carrying a wall load of 8.27 kN/m
including its weight. Keep the steel ratio within 1% and 16 mm diameter reinforcing bars.
Use fy=413.7 MPa and fc’=27.6MPa and a minimum concrete cover of 63.5mm
