1. INTRODUCTION
The aim of this technical specification is to define the extent of the geotechnical
survey to be performed for the Jetty and Retaining wall for 2 x 660 MW Maitree
Thermal Power Project, Rampal, Bangladesh.
2. PROJECT LOCATION
The Nearest town Khulna is at a distance of 23 km from project site. The site is
connected by road from Mangla-Khulna Highway.
3. SCOPE OF WORKS
Drilling will be carried out using an appropriate rotary drilling method to achieve
good recovery in granular and cohesive soils and rock formations.
Casing of the borehole will be mandatory in loose sediments to avoid falls of the
walls of borehole. The Minimum diameter of the borehole shall be 150mm
At the desired sampling depth, the borehole must be clean, and cased if necessary.
All samples shall be sealed and labelled.
Standard Penetration tests (SPT) shall be carried out at intervals of 1.5 m and at
the change of strata, in recent sediments using a standard split spoon sampler. The
hammer to be used shall be an automatic hammer of 63.5 kg falling from a height
of 76 cm.
The casing pipe shall be over the height of test and the water in the hole shall be
maintained over the water table to prevent piping.
The recovery and rock quality designation (RQD) to be recorded. The angle of
joints and bedding to be measured if applicable
6. DRILLING LOGS
Soil tests will be performed on selected samples to obtain the properties of each
layer encountered. At least two samples of each layer are recommended to be
tested. The tests program should be under direction of experienced engineers and
geologists.
Average tests values of soil properties must be identified as well as the range of
variability.

Atterberg limits X
Unconfined compression X X
Soil tests shall be carried out to obtain as results basic geotechnical data like C, Ø,
γ, Cr, Cc, etc.

The aim of this chapter is to describe the criteria used for selecting the locations to
carry the geological survey, namely, boreholes and DCPT test
The process for selecting the survey sites was based on three key aspects:
before deciding on the basic principles of the design of the works. It may
be that the desk study of existing information will provide sufficient high
quality data for a preliminary design to be started with confidence.
Article 12.4 – (…) the initial stage might involve widely spaced boreholes,
probing, or trial pits designed to establish the general geological
conditions, the suitability of different methods of investigation, the
groundwater conditions, or an indication of the degree of chemical
contamination.
Article 12.6 - Although no hard and fast rules can be laid down (…) where
a structure consists of a number of adjacent units, one exploration point
per unit may suffice
Jetty Location: Three boreholes are proposed on Jetty more or less equally
spaced in order to facilitate the mobilization and demobilization of survey
equipment, without compromising the quality of results.
Retaining wall location: Five borehole are proposed along the Retaining wall.
Anchor Wall Location : Four DCPT's are proposed along the proposed anchor
wall location
