10. SURVEY SITE SELECTION

The aim of this chapter is to describe the criteria used for selecting the locations to
carry the geological survey, namely, boreholes and DCPT test

The process for selecting the survey sites was based on three key aspects:

1. The existent Geotechnical details

2. The adopted standards
3. Site assessment based on experience

10.1. ADOPTED STANDARDS

The British Standard 5930: 1999 state that:

Article 12.1 - The extent of the ground investigation is determined by the

character and variability of the ground and groundwater, the type of
project and the amount and quality of existing information. It is important
that the general character and variability of the ground be established

before deciding on the basic principles of the design of the works. It may
be that the desk study of existing information will provide sufficient high
quality data for a preliminary design to be started with confidence.

Article 12.3 - The investigation should yield sufficient data on which to

base an adequate and economical design of the project. (…)The lateral
and vertical extent of the investigation should cover all ground that may be
significantly affected by the new works or their construction.

Article 12.4 – (…) the initial stage might involve widely spaced boreholes,
probing, or trial pits designed to establish the general geological
conditions, the suitability of different methods of investigation, the
groundwater conditions, or an indication of the degree of chemical
contamination.

Article 12.5 - The points of exploration, e.g. boreholes, soundings, pits,

should be so located that a general geological view of the whole site can
be obtained providing details of the engineering properties of the soils and
rocks and of groundwater conditions. More detailed information should be
obtained at positions of important structures and earthworks, at points of
special engineering difficulty or importance and where ground conditions
are complicated (…).

Article 12.6 - Although no hard and fast rules can be laid down (…) where
a structure consists of a number of adjacent units, one exploration point
per unit may suffice

10.2. RECOMMENDED SURVEY LOCATIONS

Based on the previous arguments, it is recommended the following surveys

according to the Stand-By Jetty area:

 Jetty Location: Three boreholes are proposed on Jetty more or less equally
spaced in order to facilitate the mobilization and demobilization of survey
equipment, without compromising the quality of results.
 Retaining wall location: Five borehole are proposed along the Retaining wall.
 Anchor Wall Location : Four DCPT's are proposed along the proposed anchor
wall location

Nonetheless, it is mentioned that in case a geological anomaly or unexpected

geological features are encountered, an extended survey will be considered.
