THE KITE

It’s a beautiful day and Afiq decides to take out and play his beautiful kite. He always play his kite with
his helper’s son, Ramlee.

SCENE 1

AFIQ :Take the spool and hold it tight….

Give the string to me!

RAMLEE :Take it from under.

AFIQ :Okay, I’m under now..

RAMLEE :Cut him before he cuts your string.

AFIQ :Oh no! Put down the spool now. I say now!

Take it Ramlee…take it! (the kite had been cut and flew away)

Ramlee is chasing after Afiq’s kite before the other kids get it. He jumps and runs as fast as he could to
take the kite before the others.

SCENE 2

RAMLEE : Yes. Afiq’s favourite kite is safe in my hand. (talk to himself)

SHIKIN : Hey!! Give me the kite. I cut it so it should be mine.

RAMLEE : No way! I won’t. I caught it first.

SHIKIN : Oh Yeah… well you ask for trouble…

Guys, take that kite from him. It’s mine now!

(In the meantime, Afiq reached there but he was hiding behind the building wall)

RAMLEE :No! stay away from me. Afiq will ask his father to hurt all of you.

So don’t touch me.

AQILA :Where’s your Afiq?…he is not here now. You are just a servant boy. Hahaha

SHIKIN :Hahaha…. Afiq probably went home. He didn’t care about his kite.

EMELDA :That’s right. He didn’t even care about you. Let’s hit him…

(Four of them were fighting. Ramlee still hold tight to the kite and never let it go. Shikin with her fist
punched him in the nose which caused bleeding. As they were shouting and fighting, some adult
passers-by saw them and stopped the three from bullying Ramlee. )

Pakcik Malek : Hey, stop it. I said!! stop it…enough….. Look! Ramlee is bleeding.

Are you okay, Ramlee? Are you hurt?

Ramlee : I - I - am fine, Pak…cik Malek. (still hold tight to the kite)

Pakcik Malek : Let’s bring those boys to Pak Rahman house. They should be punished.
(on their way to Afiq’s house, Ramlee was a bit sad because the kite had broken and torn. He could
care less about his bleeding nose. He was just sad because that kite is Afiq’s favourite. As they reached
home and met Pak Rahman…)

SCENE 3

Pak Rahman : Ramlee, what happened?...

Where is Afiq? (feeling concern about his son)

Ramlee : I’m not sure … I left him while chasing this kite. (sad and shameful)

Pakcik malek : Pak Rahman, I saw Ramlee was beaten up by those bullies.

Pak Rahman : Kadir!!...kadir!!. Please come here..

And someone, please find Afiq.

Pakcik Kadir : Oh my gosh! What have you done Ramlee? Have you got into a fight?

Why do you disgrace me? (with angry feeling)

Ramlee : No, Dad. I didn’t start the fight. They were trying to take away this kite. (his

father was checking on his face)

( In a short while, Afiq came in. )

Afiq : Dad…. what’s going on…?

Pak Rahman : There you are Afiq. What do you have to say now!…

I know you were with Ramlee. Hey…that is your kite. (while pointing at the kite)

Did you ask Ramlee to fight for you?

Afiq : No dad. I did not. We were playing for a while. Then…

Ramlee : (interrupted Afiq conversation )

I’m sorry Pak Rahman. Afiq has nothing to do with it. I went to chase after his kite
because I wanted to. He didn’t order me. While chasing the kite, I managed to catch it.
But Shikin and her friends… they wanted this kite too.

That is why we ended up fighting.

Pak Rahman : Is this true, Afiq?

Shikin…Aqila and Emelda……..

Shikin, Aqila & Emelda : We are sorry Pak Rahman. The kite is beautiful. we are greedy…that is

why we wanted it. Ramlee was defending his kite. So we ended up fighting.

Pak Rahman : And Afiq….

(Ramlee felt sorry for Afiq)

Ramlee : It’s okay Pak Rahman. It’s all my fault. i‘m sorry. I promise never to get myself

into a fight again. (while looking at Afiq)

Pak Rahman : Alright then…

And the three of you. I will ask Pak Malek to tell your parents about this.

If I ever heard any of you geeting into a fight again. you will be sorry.

Understand!

Shikin, Aqila & Emelda : Yes, sir. we are sorry. we promise never to do it again.

Next day, Ramlee repaired the broken and torn kite. He went to meet Afiq.

SCENE 4

Ramlee : Afiq, here’s your kite. Sorry, I have to change the paper. I couldn’t afford to buy the

beautiful paper.

Afiq : Ramlee….. (He felt of guilty after looking at Ramlee’s face)

Come, follow me…. to see my dad.

(They both went to meet Tuan Rahman)

Afiq : D-Dad…. I have something to confess.

Pak Rahman : Yes. What is it?...

Afiq : About yesterday’s incident…. actually.., I was the one who asked Ramlee to get

me the kite. If I didn’t ask him to chase it…he wouldn’t get into a fight yesterday.

I’m sorry I lied. I saw what had happened, but I couldn’t stand to defend him.

If I interfered, I knew shikin and her friend wouldn’t dare to hurt Ramlee.

I felt so ashamed, dad.

Pak Rahman : And why were you ashamed….?

Afiq : Because….., he is just our servant’s son….( feeling ashamed)

When he defended the kite like his own life for me….

And he also lied to you for me by saying he wanted to chase the kite.

I felt guilty. I couldn’t sleep. I shouldn’t ask him to chase the kite.

It is not worth it. (while looking at Ramlee)

Afiq : Ramlee, I’m so sorry for not being there for you. you have been loyal to me. I am so

grateful for having a true friend like you. Will you forgive me…?
Ramlee : You did nothing wrong to me… I’m just happy that you like to share your toys

and play it with me. Furthermore, I enjoyed spending time playing kites with you.

As long as you will be my friend.

Pak Rahman : (Clap hands)

I’m glad you have realized your mistakes and value the meaning of friendship and
loyalty, Afiq.

(giving Afiq & Ramlee a little pat at the shoulder/back)

I’m so proud of both of you. Never forget there values in life.

(After two months, Afiq and Ramlee still play kites together. They share knowledge and ideas

how to make strong kites together.)

SCENE 5

Afiq : This new kite is good. (while pulling the string)

Ramlee : Thanks Afiq.

Afiq : looks like someone wants a fight….

Hold it tight, Ramlee.

Ramlee : watch, I’m going to pull under and cut it… .. (while he is trying to cut it)

Look! I cut his kite….

Afiq : Do you want me to run after that kite for you?

Ramlee : For you, a thousand times over….i would.

Afiq : come, let’s chase it together. (while laughing together)

A friend in need is a friend indeed.
