BIOGRAPHY
The career of Carcar native Marcelino Navarra, “Father of the Modern Cebuano Short
Story,” covered three decades of active writing. He wrote poems and short stories with
his pen name Marcel Navarra. He also worked with Bisaya, Republic News, and Bulak.
“Tungod sa Kayagang,” his first story, appeared in Nasud in 1931. His best-known story
“Ug Gianod Ako” is a prizewinner of Bisaya’s literary contest. Among his influences
were O. Henry, Guy de Maupassant, Ernest Hemingway, and Anton Chekhov. He lived
from June 2, 1914 to March 28, 1984.
