Blue or Red?

By: A333

“Pepsi and Coke have to co-exist on the shelf for the long term because if they pull each other down, no
one's going to drink carbonated soft drinks anymore.”

- John Quelch

Drinks are one of the things that can’t go missing in social gatherings like parties. Especially when
eating in a fastfood restaurant, consumption of softdrinks can’t be avoided since it comes with the food as
a set. Talking about softdrinks can only mean talking about the two giants in softdrinks industry – the
blue one, which is the Pepsi, and the red one which is coke.

Coke and Pepsi are both softdrinks that can be found in a bottle or a can. Both are black in color, and
forms fizz when opened. The two can cause problems like stomach acidity, on overconsumption. The two
are similar in many ways, yet they have lots of differences.

The histories of the two are different. Coke was invented in 1886 by a chemist named John
Pemberton while Pepsi was invented by Caleb Bradham, a pharmacist. Coke utilizes the flavor made by
the coca leaf extract which the company imported. Pepsi can’t import coca leaf so the company used citric
acid instead, which Coke does not include in its listed ingredients.

With regards to the flavor, Coke has a vanilla-raisin taste to it. Pepsi has a citrus, lemony flavor. Coke
is less sweet and a little bit smoother than Pepsi but Pepsi has more sugar and caffeine than Coke, which
makes Pepsi sweeter initially. Malcom Gladwell wrote in his 2005 book Blink, that, "Pepsi, in short, is a
drink built to shine in a sip test."

Coke and Pepsi are two almost-similar softdrinks. The difference of Coke and Pepsi is just the
amount of sugar and the history on the creation of the two. Blue? Or Red? No one knows who the true
winner is. It’s all about the preference of the drinker. Be the judge.
