Windows 8.1 error with Group Policy December 14, 2017

Windows 8.1 /
Hi Performance &
system failures
I am running the latest updated Windows 8.1 on a generic
desktop machine.

Since the last update I have been getting the following

message when I log-on:

"Failed to connect to a windows service

Windows could not connect to the Group Policy Client
service. The problem prevents standard users from logging
on to the system.
As an administrative user, you can review the System Event
Log for details about why the service didn't respond"

The service is showing as stopped and all options to start

etc. are greyed out.

I know this has been raised with other windows versions

but can not find any help for 8.1

Any ideas?

cheers

Microsoft

Hi Gorwyn,

It seems like some corruption has occurred on the

computer while installing the recent Windows Updates.
This issue could be either due to some corrupted system
files or missing registry entries on the computer. Let’s try
the following methods and check if that resolves the issue.
To check for the corrupted system files, let’s first try SFC
Scan and check if that helps.

Method 1: Run an SFC Scan

The “sfc /scannow” command scans all protected system

files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft
versions.

a) Press “Windows Logo” + “Q” keys on the keyboard and

type “cmd” in the search box.
b) Right click on the “Command Prompt” icon from the
search results and select “Run as administrator”
c) On the command prompt window, type the following
command, and then press “Enter”

sfc /scannow

d) Follow the on-screen instructions and complete the scan.

If the issue persists, then I would suggest you to try the

next method and check the status.

Method 2: Fix the Missing the Registry Entries

I would suggest you to refer to the thread link given below

and try the suggestions given by the Community Member

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps

that tell you how to modify the registry. However,
serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these
steps carefully. For added protection, back up the
registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the
registry if a problem occurs. Follow the steps given here
to back up registry.

a) Press “Windows Logo” + “R” keys on the keyboard to

open the “Run” command box.
b) Type “regedit” in the “Run” command box.
c) Locate and click the key or sub-key that you want to
back up.
d) Click the “File” menu, and then click on “Export”.
e) In the “Save in” box, select the location where you
want to save the backup copy to, and then type a name
for the backup file in the File name box.
f) Click on “Save”.

Please get back to us with the results.
