Guidelines for Sharing

The effort should have been tried in education concretely and not just be based on theoretical
arguments all alone. We focus on approaches that have been “experimented on a large scale”
and proliferating, from one institution to another, in a natural manner.
The content should be:
Logical: Possible to discuss and ask questions
Verifiable: Can be verified in one’s experience; non-mystical; not a set of do’s & don’ts
Universal: Applicable to all individuals, for all time, for all places
Humane & Natural: Good for people as well as the planet
Scope: Encompassing all aspects of life

About the Conference

Since AKTU began to incorporate UHV in its academic curriculum in 2009, a significant amount
of work has been done and several encouraging achievements have resulted from these efforts.
With this homework, the first national conference was conducted in 2018 on the theme
“Developing a Holistic perspective”.

This is the second national conference and this year’s theme is “AKTU as a Living Model for a
Sustainable Humane Society”. It is organized by the AKTU Value Education Cell through
TEQIP-3.

This conference is to share and discuss the work at the national level to help develop further
momentum for human, value-based education in India.

Some of the encouraging events at AKTU since 2009 have been:

2009 – Introduced a Foundation Course in Human Values and Professional Ethics
Established AKTU VE Cell with a part-time coordinator
A Text Book, Teacher’s Manual and Teachers’ Orientation Programs (TOP) were
developed
2012 – AKTU becomes an organizing partner for the International Conference on Human
Values in Higher Education (ICHVHE). We have been an active contributing partner in every
ICHVHE since then
2015 – Extension of VE Cell with a full-time head
Appointment of Dean Value Education , BoS for Value Education
Many colleges establish VE Cells
Nodal centres established – eight centres become functional
2017 – AKTU hosted the 6th ICHVHE at IIT Kanpur. A 388-page proceedings of the conference
documented the progress and impact of value education
Development process strengthened. Multi-level faculty development programs (FDP)
started. Facilitator (resource person), co-facilitator (potential resource person), local program
coordinator and observer roles initiated to groom resource persons and program coordinator
2018 – 1st National Conference on Universal Human Values in Higher Education (Theme was
“Developing a Holistic Perspective”)
44 nodal centres established so far, regional nodal centres mooted
36 resource persons, 35 potential resource persons, 300 committed team members
have emerged out of the 6000+ faculty who have gone through the FDPs on UHV
2019 – Supplementary courses on UHV through various traditions have been approved, to be
started in due course of time

Through such conferences and other efforts, the much-needed value education is proliferating
in quite a natural manner from university to university. Today there are more than 50 universities
which have included UHV in their academic curriculum. Since 2018, AICTE has included UHV in
its Model Curriculum applicable country-wide. It is to be offered as an essential 3-credit course
(H-102) in 3rd/4th semester; as well as a prominent module (H-101) in the student induction
program.

This second conference is primarily aimed at:

1. Sharing the efforts on value-based education 2009-2019; as well as its impact within and
beyond AKTU, with the higher education fraternity
2. Developing a strong way-forward, a plan for developing AKTU as a living model of a
sustainable humane society
In the 2006 pre-independence day address to the nation, Dr
APJ Abdul Kalam, the then President of India, had noted
about universal human values “…this process of imparting
self-knowledge would promote a learning atmosphere, where
this whole movement of inquiry into knowledge, into oneself,
into the possibility of something beyond knowledge would
bring about naturally a psychological revolution.. From this
comes inevitably a totally different order in human relationship
and therefore society as a whole. The intelligent
understanding of this process itself can bring about a
profound change in the consciousness of mankind…”
