APPENDIX
Reflective Journal: The Difficulties in Finding Respondents

In conducting this research, the researchers did not find many difficulties in
finding respondents. This is because there are several friends of researchers who help
find other respondents. The respondents came from several universities in Bogor and
other country.

In distributing questionnaires, the researchers used social media to share the

online questionnaire links (Google Form). It was very helpful for the researchers in
distributing the questionnaires and making it easier for the respondents to fill them
out because the questionnaires can be filled anywhere and anytime. Therefore, the
minimum number of respondents' requirements in this research can be fulfilled in one
day, which is 31 respondents.
Reflective Journal: Constructing the Questionnaire

A questionnaire is an instrument which is useful for gathering data when

someone is doing his research , and also for survey. It helps the researcher to obtain
the data, except by interviewing and observing. It means, a questionnaire is
important to the researcher.

In this case, the ESP lecturer has informed to her students that they should
have constructed a questionnaire. ESP is talking about learning English in other
majors. For instance, this group was asked to make an ESP questionnaire for
Economic students, which is for the Economics Major. Then, the other groups are
also asked to make an ESP questionnaires, based on their result after choosing the
majors.

After that, the ESP lecturer informed the students to construct the
questionnaire based on what major they had received. She also told us that the
students should have followed the Indicators. Constructing a questionnaire based on
the Indicators is important.

There are four indicators which are helpful for making the
questionnaire. There are “Learner Bacakground”, “Necessity”, “Wants”, and “Lack”.
The “Learner Background” indicator shows about the students learning process. It is
good to obtain a better understanding about each student’s background. Then, the “
Necessity” indicator is about what the students need by learning English. It is
important to know this because it is not every lesson of learning English shoud be
taught. It means, an ESP teacher should understand the lesson in learning English
which is their needs / necessity. After that, there is the “Wants” indicator which is
about the students wants by learning English based in their major. It can also be about
what their hope by learning English. The last, it is the “Lack” indicator which shows
about the lack of the students in learning English. It is also important to know this in
order to know what is their difficulty and trouble in learning English, and also to
know what an ESP teacher should teach to them. Those are the brief explanation
about the Indicators.

Beside of the indicators, there is also scale of questionnaire. It is also

important to know the respondents in answering and filling the questionnaire. This
group used two kind of the scale. Likert scale is used in this group questionnaire. It is
a scale used for measuring attitude, opinion, and perception of someone or some
people. There is also a semantic differential scale. It is useful to measure the
connotative menaing of objects, events, ad concepts. Respondents are asked to rate
something based on question. That is all about scale of questionnaire.
After all of those stuff have understood, this group started to make and
construct the questionnaire. The members of this group also found out the material of
constructing the questionnaire on Google, and also the lecturer. The questionnaire are
made based on the indocators sistematically. It started from “Learner Bacakground”,
“Necessity”, “Wants”, and “Lack”. This questionnaire also has revised by the lecturer
because of the inappropriate scale of questionnaire and inappropriate questions.

After the revision, this group has uploaded the questionnaire by using Google
Form. Here is the questionnaire
Reflective Journal: Diagram

This purpose of writing this journal is to describe the result of the

questionnaire diagram that the researchers got. In this research, the researchers made
13 questionnaires relate to economic field. It was filled by 31 respondents from the
different universities in Indonesia. This journal shows the data and the conclusion of
the diagram from the questionnaires.

The researchers found 31 respondents who filled or answered the researchers’

questionnaire. There are the students of 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018 from the
different universities.

The data shows that the most of respondents who filled the questionnaires are
the students entered college in 2015.

The first question, the researchers asked when the last time respondents
studied English.
The highest percentages are 35.5%, it means most of respondents learned
English a year ago and the lowest is respondents who learned it in the previous
month.

The second diagram is how often the respondents study English in the class.

The data above presents themost respondents studying English in their classes
are once a week and there is no respondents who study for three times a week.
The third question is “Do you often find English text and read it in the
lectures?” The respondent should choose one of five numbers in linear scale (often to
infrequent).

The highest percentage is 3, some respondents choose sometimes they found

English text and read it during the class. The lowest is 3.2%, this respondent found
English language almost every day or may be she/he read it every day.

The fourth is about the respondents’ opinion spending their time in learning
English in their classes. It is enough, may be or not yet.
The data collected most of respondents (45.2%) feeling enough in learning
English at their classes but some of them (25.8%) doubts it.

The fifth, the lecturer provided English language subject as the respondents’
needed or not and this is the percentage of their answers.

The result is 51.6% of 100% respond choose ‘Yes’. It means some of

respondents feel the English subject provided as students needed by their English
lecturer.

The sixth question is about the method that their lecturers used and it is
compatible or not when the lecturer applied it on the class.
This result almost the same like the previous question and 54.8% the
respondents feel the method is appropriate. The percentage numbers of respondents,
who choose ‘No’ and ‘May be’, is the same that is 22.6%.

The seventh question is how important English language for the respondents’
field.

‘Very important’ percentage and ‘Important’ percentage have the same

numbers that is 41.9%. That becomes the highest number of this diagram and 3.2% is
the lowest which is ‘Not important’.

The eighth question is about English language skill, the respondents can
choose more than one skill, it relates to English language skill they want to improve.
The highest skill number is speaking 90.3%, followed by listening 48.4% then
writing 35.5%, and the last is reading skill 25.8%.

The ninth, “are you interested in learning English related to your field or
major?”
There are 74.2% respondents interested in learning English which related to
economy field and there is no one who does not want to learn it.

The tenth has the same type of the question like the third, it is linear scale
(very difficult to easy). How difficult English Language for the respondents.

64.5% is the highest number where more than a half respondent feel English
Language is not hard and also not easy.
The eleventh question, what English skill that the respondents think hardest.

The table above presents most respondents’ difficulties are listening skill
because it has the higher percentage that is 54.8% from 100% and nobody think that
reading is hard for them.

In the twelfth question is about the respondentachievement or the reason why

they learn English.
67.7% of respondents wanted to improve their quality in English language,
19.4% respondents need it to meet the requirements from the companies and the rest
of it is 12.9% respondents having a plan to work on abroad.

The last question of this questionnaire is what the respondents do to increase

their English language abilities. The respondents were given a free to choose more
that an option.

Social media become the top way they learn English. The percentage is
90.3%. This number is high when compared to the other choices, especially movie or
music which have 3.2%.

The most of respondents do not always find English language in their field
(Economic field). They feel they spend the time enough in learning English language.
The lecturers also have a good method in teaching English and provide what the
students’ needed. The data above shows English language is very important for
economic students. They need it to increase their English language skill especially
speaking. Even though the respondents think that it is not really difficult but listening
become the biggest problem when they learn about it. Some respondents want to
improve their quality by learning English language and also most of them use the
social media to increase their English skill.
