Weekly Journal Log

1. What did I learn this week?

- This week, the discussion was all about Geometric Series. It is similar to
arithmetic series, but this one is, of course, the sum of the terms of a geometric
sequence. There are different formulas for this one. The formula for finite
𝒂𝟏 (𝟏−𝒓𝒏 ) 𝒂𝟏 −𝒂𝒏𝒓
geometric sequence wherein r ≠ 1 is: 𝒔𝒏 = or 𝒔𝒏 =
𝟏−𝒓 𝟏−𝒓

There is a special case of finite geometric series:

If r = 1, we could use: 𝒔𝒏 = 𝒏𝒂𝟏
If r = - 1, and n is even, then 𝒔𝒏 = 𝟎
If r = - 1, but n is odd, then 𝒔𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏
To get the sum of an infinite geometric series, there are two cases:
𝒂
If -1 < r < 1, then use: 𝒔∞ = 𝟏
𝟏−𝒓
If r > 1 or r < -1, then 𝒔∞ 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒓 𝒏𝒐 𝒔𝒖𝒎.
Addition information: If 𝒂𝟏 is missing, we could use this derived formula:
𝒔𝒏 (𝟏−𝒓)
𝒂𝟏 =
𝟏−𝒓𝒏

2. What concepts did I like most? Explain.

- The concept I liked most is getting the sum of an infinite geometric series,
especially if r > 1 or r < -1 because the answer is automatically 𝒔∞ has no
limit or no sum.

3. What concepts did I like least? Explain.

- The concept I liked least was when we were asked to find the r or the common
ratio. I actually don’t know how to derive the formula to get it.

4. How will you rate the subject as a whole this week? 1-10. 1 as difficult & 10 as
easy.
- I’d give this topic a 9/10. The lesson this week was a piece of cake, the only
problem for me is there are a lot of formulas. They are starting to confuse me.

5. Write an example or problem that will demonstrate your learning.

a. Find the specified term: 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟕, 𝒓 = 𝟓 ; 𝒔𝟔 = ?
𝒂𝟏 (𝟏 − 𝒓𝒏 )
𝒔𝒏 =
𝟏−𝒓
7(1−56 )
𝑠6 =
1−5
7(−15624)
𝑠6 =
−4
𝒔𝟔 = 𝟐𝟕𝟑𝟒𝟐

𝟏
b. If 𝒂𝟏 = , 𝒓 = 𝟑 ; 𝒔∞ = ?
𝟑
r > 1 so
𝒔∞ has no limit or no sum.

1. What did I learn this week?

- This week, the discussion was all about Geometric Series, it is the sum of
the terms of a geometric sequence. We tackled the special case if n is
even and r = -1, then 𝒔𝒏 = 𝟎. If n is odd and r = -1, then 𝒔𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 . Lastly,
the sum of an infinite geometric series where there’s also a condition if
𝒂𝟏
r > 1 or r < -1, then 𝒔∞ has no limit or no sum. And the formula of 𝒔∞ is 𝟏−𝒓
if – 1 < r < 1.

2. What concepts did I like most? Explain.

- I like the concept of finding the geometric series when you need to
find the 𝒂𝟏 first because this gives me more challenge.

3. What concepts did I like least? Explain.

- This time, the variables are my enemies. I dislike it when there are
variables included and you need to find the x first. Because when this
topic was discussed, I couldn’t focus well.

4. How will you rate the subject as a whole this week? 1-10. 1 as difficult & 10
as easy.
- I will rate the topic this week an 8/10. Although this topic was delivered
well, some of it was kind of confusing to me. But, the whole topic was
amazing.

5. Write an example or problem that will demonstrate your learning.

a. 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟏𝟏, 𝒓 = 𝟑 ; 𝒔𝟏𝟔 = ?
11(1 − 316 )
𝑠16 =
1−3
− 473513920
𝑠16 =
−2
𝒔𝟏𝟔 = 236 756 960

𝟏
b. 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟓, 𝒓 = 𝟑 ; 𝒔∞ = ?

𝟓
𝒔∞ =
𝟏
𝟏− 𝟑
𝟏𝟓
𝒔∞ = 𝒐𝒓 𝟕. 𝟓
