Research Highlights on Adhesive Properties of PVP (Substrates) from the Literature:

1. Mechanical Interlocking –
 Mechanical interlocking is an effective method to build a strong adhesive joint when a
substrate has an irregular surface, because the adhesive can enter the irregularities
prior to hardening.
 if the surfaces of aluminum and titanium were porous and microscopically rough,
mechanical interlock with the polymer can form much stronger and more durable
bonds. ~ Venables et al.
 ~ Brockmann et al. also confirmed that micro mechanical interlocking between the
polymer and the porous, thick oxide layer could play an important role in adhesive
strength and durability.

2. Ceramics –
a. binder in high temperature fire-prepared products such as clay, pottery, porcelain,
brick product, dispersant for ceramic media slurries and viscosity modifier.
b. it is used as a binder in high-temperature fire prepared products such as clay,
pottery, porcelain and bricks.
c. It exerts no influence on the ceramic product and it is, in addition, compatible with
inorganic materials. Among the properties that this polymer possess, it can be
mentioned that it has good adhesion, binding and compatibility with raw materials,
improves glaze and color fixation

3. Metallurgy –
 processing for both ferrous and nonferrous metals, coating ingredient to aid or remove
material from metal surfaces such as copper, nickel, zinc and aluminum.

4. Adhesive films from PVP have very good adherence particularly to paper, glass, metal,
plastic (e.g., poly(propylene), poly(ethylene), poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyurethane),
skin, sand and minerals, or textile surfaces. The higher vinyl acetate copolymers provide
better adhesion to polar substrates such as vinyl, aluminum, and steel, while the lower
vinyl acetate copolymers are often used for bonding low energy surfaces.
