At Herman Miller, we’ve been studying sitting—and how it
affects people—for more than 70 years. Along the way, we’ve
pioneered new materials, manufacturing techniques, from
the organic curves of molded plywood to the revolutionary
ergonomics of Aeron to the intuitively responsive design of
Mirra 2.
Through our human-centered approach to design, we’ve come
to understand how a chair can empower the human body to
perform at a high level in a seated posture. As a result, the
patented materials, mechanisms, and technologies present in
all of our highest performing chairs work together to provide a
better sit for everyone.

Total Performance
PostureFit, Dynamic Support, and Balanced Recline are
the building blocks that form the DNA of Herman Miller
Performance Seating. While each of these technologies
provides an important point of differentiation for Herman Miller,
it’s the synthesis of all three in the final design of a chair that
differentiates Herman Miller from other seating manufacturers.
This emphasis on the total performance of our chairs does not
supersede the importance of human-centered design; one
complements the other.

Total Performance—PostureFit
When you sit, gravity works against you, pulling your upper
body down and causing you to slump. But when your back is
properly supported, your muscles don’t need to work as hard
to maintain a healthful posture. PostureFit works by tilting your
hips slightly forward, stabilizing the base of your spine to help
it maintain its natural S-shaped curve in profile. This empowers
your body and reduces fatigue.
Total Performance—Balanced Recline
The act of reclining is a great way to take a microbreak from
sitting. It redistributes your weight and opens up the angle
of your upper and lower body, which can be good for your
circulation. However, if the same level of support you get sitting
upright falls away as you recline, you won’t feel balanced and
supported as your chair moves with you. To solve this problem,
we’ve engineered our tilt motion around your body’s natural
pivot points—your ankles, knees, and hips. The result is a
smooth, balanced recline that works for everybody, and
every body.

Research suggests that as you sit for an hour, your posture
changes approximately 53 times. And every time it does, you
don’t want to have to fight against your chair. That’s why ours
feature dynamic surfaces that are adaptive enough to conform

Customer Profiles—Budd Tucker, Ph.D.
When Budd Tucker, Ph.D., left his position at Harvard to become
the Wynn Associate Professor of Regenerative Ophthalmology
at the University of Iowa, his Embody Chair made the trip to
Iowa City with him. After his recovery from meningitis left him
with nagging back and neck pain, Budd researched office chairs
that could help and settled on Embody. He’s since purchased
Herman Miller Equa Chairs for his lab as well (Embody’s
material offering doesn’t include a bleach-cleanable vinyl;
Equa’s does).
Customer Profiles—Alice Gao
Freelance travel and still-life photographer Alice Gao has built
a following of more than 950,000 fans on Instagram from the
comfort of her Sayl Chair. In this video profile, Alice explains
that when she left her corporate job to pursue her passion for
