CRMSD ALLIED SCIENCES K to 12 CURRICULUM

The Allied Sciences specifically aims to establish a learning environment which would emphasize the
development of the students’ conceptual understanding, skill proficiencies and critical thinking capabilities
relative to the demands of science and advancing technology. Its framework is supported by the following
underlying learning principles and theories: Experiential and Situated Learning, Reflective Learning,
Constructivism, Cooperative Learning and Discovery and Inquiry- based Learning, which are meant to be achieved
with an organized, rigorous and enhanced curriculum content, a well- defined set of high- level skills and
processes, desirable values and attitudes and appropriate tools, recognizing in its course, the different contexts of
Filipino science learners.

The CRMSD Allied Sciences K to 12 Curriculum is one of the essential disciplines in the Basic Education
curriculum of the Congregation of the Religious Missionaries of St. Dominic (CRMSD) designed after the
competencies provided by DepEd and further enhanced to ensure the delivery of quality education which is
distinctly Dominican. This is structured in accordance with the mission –vision of the congregation, that is,
education being aimed at forming students who are Christ-centered, defenders of truth, and responsible citizens
equipped with necessary skills and competencies. Thus, this discipline provides the needs of the students to be
integrated, competent, and morally upright.

It covers four major subjects- Science and Technology, Mathematics, Computer, and Technology and
Vocational Education- which provides learners with a repertoire of competencies aimed at preparing them for
work, enterpreneurship, middle- level skills development and/ or higher education.

The content of Allied Sciences is intended to support the goals of the area for Dominican students primarily,
mastery in mathematical and scientific concepts and skills so that eventually, they will become objective problem
solvers, critical and logical decision makers, and technologically savvy workforce who could compete in the global
market. Moreover, it further aims to develop informed citizens who will be able to deal with the complexities of the
real world and open-minded enough to embrace change as is demanded by the times.

CRMSD SCIENCE K12 CURRICULUM

The CRMSD Science Curriculum is a comprehensive network of learning competencies hierarchically

arranged from the simplest to the most complex based on the prescribed competencies by the Department of
Education in its K-12 Basic Education Curriculum. The program, however, goes beyond the Department of
Education standards in line with the school’s vision of academic competency for its graduates. The science and
program is geared towards the development of skills based on the three domains of science literacy namely
understanding and applying scientific knowledge, performing scientific processes and skills, and developing and
demonstrating scientific attitudes and values. The domains incorporate implications of science to social,
environmental and technological issues confronting every Filipino citizen so that in the long run, the students
maybe able to realize its positive impact in their lives. These are carried out through various inquiry-oriented,
integrative, hands-on and practical-based activities. The program is enhanced through indoor and outdoor
laboratory blocks called investigations. These sets employ investigative approach, which involves students in
defining problems, designing experiments to find solutions, carrying out practical work and interpreting the
results.

The curriculum is learner-centered and inquiry-based, emphasizing the use of evidence in constructing
explanations. The program is aimed at working on five (5) Standards of Learning 1) Matter 2) Living Things and
Their Environment 3) Force, Motion, and Energy 4) Earth/Space Science 5) Science Investigations. The concepts in
each standard are presented with increasing level of complexity from one grade level to another (spiral
progression), thus paving the way to deeper understanding of a few concepts. These concepts and skills are
integrated rather than discipline based, stressing the connections across science topics and other discipline based,
stressing the connections across science topics and other disciplines as well as applications of concepts and
thinking skills to real life.

In this changing world, the program also provides opportunities and options for students to fulfill personal
ambitions and career goals through the offering of additional science and technology disciplines on the assessment
results of every student. The clear articulation of the CRMSD Science Curriculum hopefully will provide a road
map to teachers in guiding their students in attaining science and technology knowledge beyond what is expected
of them.

CRMSD SCIENCE STANDARDS OF LEARNING

The Science and Technology standards contained in the following document identifies five categories of
expectations for the formation of Dominican students in the catholic faith:

Standards of Learning 1 – Matter

Standards of Learning 2 – Living Things and Their Environment
Standards of Learning 3 – Force, Motion and Energy
Standards of Learning 4 – Earth / Space Science
Standards of Learning 5 – Science Investigations
Developing sound curricula – that is, choosing appropriate resources, adapting effective learning strategies that
allow smooth transition and alignment of topics both vertically and horizontally – will assure the desired learning
outcome that would make for truly Catholic Filipino Dominican graduates who are integrated, morally upright and
competent.

DESCRIPTION OF STANDARDS OF LEARNING

STANDARDS OF LEARNING 1 – MATTER

This sub-strand revolves on the concepts of matter; its states an phases; macro (molecular level) and micro
(atomic level) level properties and characteristics. It also deals on the elements of interactions (chemical
reactions) leading to the formulation of another unique substance under ordinary or special conditions.
Furthermore, appreciation to wide variety of artificial and natural compounds are included in this strand to enable
students appreciate matter in the context of scientific inquiry. This would then allow Dominicans to reflect in an
informed way on the role of materials in human affairs.
STANDARDS OF LEARNING 2 – LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT
This sub-strand is anchored on the biological organization of life from cellular level to system structure of
plants and animals and their environment. It primarily deals with the roles and functions of the constituent parts,
the interaction of the parts and structure and most importantly the concepts of harmony and balance to sustain
life. Thus, this involves knowing the interrelatedness, the social impact of individuality and the role of individual
play in a system using human ecology as a model of harmony and balance. Adding deeper understanding on this
sub-strand is the inclusion of the concepts of diversity of organisms as a function to preserve balance of nature and
nomenclature processes for easy identification and classification of variety of forms of organisms. This would then
allow students to be familiar with the natural world and learn the value of respect of organisms’ unity, diversity
and fragility.

STANDARDS OF LEARNING 3 – FORCE, MOTION AND ENERGY

This sub-strand focuses on the concepts of linear, rotational and angular motion, non-contact and contact
forces including the fundamental forces of nature; and energy in the physical and biological (bio-energetic) setting
and their interrelationships on a macroscopic body in a solid state. It involves the application of algebraic
expressions to quantify the amount of force applied; predict work done; estimate energy expenditure and energy
transformation on living systems and machines. This further develops students to think scientifically and use these
scientific knowledge to make decisions about real-world problems and real-community science-based issues.

STANDARDS OF LEARNING 4 – EARTH / SPACE SCIENCE

Earth/Space Science focuses on the processes and interactions of the universe, solar system, and Earth.
Investigations of Earth focus on interacting and dynamic systems including the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the
atmosphere, and the biosphere. This sub-strand also provides concepts of the solar system, its origin and existence
in a galaxy and the characteristics of the planets that comprise it. It also showcases varied human-made
technology that aid human in the discovery and the exploration of the space other than the earth. Other heavenly
bodies and their activities are likewise given attention in this strand to ensure understanding of the fate of each
members of the universe.
STANDARDS OF LEARNING 5 – SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS
This sub-strand is developed to introduce the learners to the process of scientific investigations and how to
design, conduct, communicate, ad evaluate such investigations. It is also designed to provide a scientific view the
idea that explanations of nature are developed and tested using observation, experimentation, models, evidence,
and systematic processes. Research skills addresses include classifying, observed data, designing experiments,
hypothesizing, controlling, and manipulating variables, distinguishing between treatment and control variables,
collecting and recording data, analyzing data, following safety procedures, using scientific tools, and scientific
writing.
HOW TO USE THE MATRIX

Under each content standard, the Curriculum Matrix indicates the four steps, which will guide Science educators
as to how they could consequently plan out the degree to which each curriculum content is to be taught per level.
The four categories are characterized as follows:

INTRODUCE - students are exposed to content / concepts

FOCUS - content / concepts are revised and / or explored
ENHANCE - students attain competency level with content / concepts
MAINTAIN - students are able to articulate or put into action the content / concept
learned

The Curriculum Matrix is followed by the CRMSD Science Curriculum Mapping which presents detailed
suggestions on the year level content with the corresponding connections to other disciplines and learning
activities.

GRADE TEN

Grade 10 Science program provides a complete study of the entire organism with deeper study of the excretory and reproductive
systems. In this level, learners will explain in greater detail on how genetic information is passed from parents to offspring and how
diversity of species increases the probability of adaptation and survival in changing environments. Furthermore, they will recognize
the importance of controlling the conditions under which a phenomenon or reaction occurs and distinguish that cells and tissues of
the human body are made up of water, a few kinds of ions, and biomolecules. This program requires the learners to analyze situations,
where energy is harnessed for human use whereby heat is released affecting the physical and biological component of the
environment.
