LEARNING Earth Science

AREA
LESSON Drifted Supercontinent
LEARNING Enumerate the lines of evidence that support plate movement
COMPETENCY (Code: S9ES-Ia-j-36.6)
PERFORMANCE 1. demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness during
STANDARDS earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions
2. suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government
efforts in reducing damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis, and
volcanic eruptions

OBJECTIVES A. Tell the possible direction of motion of the continents as they drifted
away.
B. Draw fossils of plants and animals as evidences found in the
present continents that will help solve the puzzle in the fitting of the
drifted continents.
C. Reconstruct and describe Pangaea.
D. Predict what will happen to the world as the continents
continuously move.

& Procedure Materials/Notes

ELICIT Guess that Word 5 mins

Preliminaries: The students were grouped into Laptop, LCD
five. Roles are assigned to each member of the projector
group. The teacher will also present the rules for
the class.
The teacher will show a word puzzle to be
arranged by the students.

ENGAGE Let’s Fit It 5 mins

The students must be able to fit the pieces of Materials:
torn newspaper page or magazine. newspaper page,
scotch tape,
What are your bases in fitting the newspaper coupon bond
page?

EXPLORE Drifted Supercontinent 20 mins

The students will perform the activity by
following the procedure: (Arts integration) Materials:
1. Cut carefully the traces of the seven Map of the world,

9. supercontinent Pangaea. HOTS),
10. 5. Compare Pangaea with the world map.
11. 6. Now move one continent relative to each
12. current location.
13. 7. Do the same procedure to the other
14. continents.
15. The students will answer the following guide
questions:
1. What do the Glossopteris fossils tell us
about the early positions of the
continents?
2. If Glossopteris fossils were found in
Antarctica, what was the climate of this
continent before?
3. If the climate and the position of a place
are relative to each other, where then
was the initial location of Antarctica 250
million years ago?
4. What does the presence of Mesosaurus
fossils tell about the initial location and
positioning of South America, Africa,
and Antarctica?
5. What clues are useful in reconstructing
Pangaea?
6. Which continents do you think were
neighbors before?

(The complete experiment can be found in the

worksheet)
EXPLAIN Lend Me Your Ears! 10 mins
Materials: Laptop,
The students will explain their answers to the LCD Projector
guide questions. (English Integration)
Group 1 - Q1 Reporting
Group 2 – Q2 and Q3 strategy,
Group 3 – Q4
Group 4 – Q5
Group 5 - Q6
The teacher will ask the class to give an
excellent clap for completing the task.
The teacher will give clarifications and further
explanation on Drifted Supercontinent.
ELABORATE 8 mins
The students will discuss about the different
evidences that support and contradict manila paper,
Continental Drift Theory? (Ask further questions marker, tape
to students for quick check)

EVALUATE . 10 mins
1. List down all the evidences of Materials:
Continental Drift Theory and explain Laptop, LCD
