Q2. Formulate the shear-force and bending-moment equations for the beam (Figure 2)
from differential equations. Sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams.
Q3. If we neglect friction at rollers and the coefficients of static friction is 0.2 for all
surfaces (Figure 3), ascertain whether the 5,000 𝑁 weight will go up, go down,
or stay stationary.

Q5. A block 𝐶 (Figure 5) weighing 10 𝑘𝑁 is being moved on rollers 𝐴 and 𝐵 each
weighing 1 𝑘𝑁 . What force 𝑃 is needed to maintain steady motion? Take the
coefficient of rolling resistance between the rollers and the ground to be 0.6 𝑚𝑚
and between block 𝐶 and the rollers to be 0.4 𝑚𝑚 .
Q6. A hot-metal ladle (Figure 6) and its contents weigh 520 𝑘𝑁. Knowing that the
coefficient of static friction between the hooks and the pinion is 0.30, determine
the tension in cable 𝐴𝐵 required to start tipping the ladle.
Q7. Compute the frictional torque needed to rotate the truncated cone (Figure 7)
relative to the fixed member. The cone has a 20 𝑚𝑚 diameter base and a 60° cone
angle and is cut off 3 𝑚𝑚 from the cone tip. The dynamic coefficient of friction
is 0.2.
Q8. A simple C-clamp (Figure 8) is used to hold two pieces of metal together. The
clamp has a single square thread with a pitch of 0.30 𝑐𝑚 and a mean diameter of
1.88 𝑐𝑚. The static coefficient of friction is 0.30. Find the torque required if a
1,000 𝑁 compressive load is required on the blocks. If the thread is a double
thread, what is the required torque?
