For our arresters we use only HTV1) or LSR2)
CH3 CH3 (CH2 – CH2)x – (CH – CH2)y – CH – CH2 –
silicone elastomers. These materials help
maintain the aforementioned properties.
Si O Si O CH2
1) HTV: High-temperature vulcanizing
2) LSR: Liquid silicone rubber CH3 CH3 CH = CH – CH3
The –Si–O– backbone of SR has a higher Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)- Ethylene Propylene Hexadiene Monomer (EPDM)
bonding energy than the –C–C– backbone of Silicone Rubber (SR)
EPDM. SR has a lower carbon proportion than
EPDM. Consequently, SR has inherently better
chemical and physical resistance, better UV Observed damage characteris-
resistance and lower flammability than tics due to natural UV on EPDM
EPDM. Consider these facts: insulators

Chalking
SR is highly stable under influence of
Chemical bond Energy (kJ per mole)
ultraviolet radiation (sunlight), ozone and
nitrogen oxide – SR beats EPDM based
alloy rubbers –Si–O– 445
Hydrophobic (water-repellant) surface (Silicone rubber
backbone)
throughout arrester service life – SR ’s
performance is excellent, whereas EPDM –C–C– 348
based alloy Rubber lacks this critical re- (EPDM and
quirement Crazing/Cracking
3) Epoxies backbone)
Resistant to arcing much higher for SR The –Si–O– backbone of SR has a higher bonding
SR Flame-retardancy complies with IEC energy than the –C–C– backbone of EPDM
60707 and UL94 V-0 (i.e. self-extinguish-
ing, no burning drips, probe does not
burn)
Resistant to all customary organic and
non-organic cleaning agents and solvents
SR performs well in ambient temperature Hydrophobic effect due to alignment of methyl
range of –60 °C to +200 °C, no other poly- groups of silicone polymers4)
meric material can beat SR
