LESSON PLAN IN SPORTS

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

a. Determine the roles and functions of the officiating official in basketball game.

b. Identify the factors to be consider in officiating the game.


c. Identify the rules of the game and demonstrate the proper execution of hand signals in

officiating basketball games.

a. Classroom management
-Good morning class. -Good morning Sir.
-Kindly arrange your chairs before we start.
-Let us pray, Renee please lead the prayer.
-Again good morning class.
-Who are absent for today?
-You may now take your seats. -None Sir.

b. Motivation
-Before we start, let me ask you this, what
comes into your mind when you hear the
word referee?
-Very good. -Sir, they are the one who officiates a game.
-You know class the referees are the
officials who are responsible for ensuring
that all the rules of the game are followed.
-So class since there is a responsibility in
officiating what are the factors the referee
must possess?
-Very good, what else? -Sir, they must be fair in making decisions.
-Very good, what else? -Sir, they must be accurate in making decisions.
-Okay class there are different factors to be
consider the referee must possess in
officiating are the following:
1. Tool:
-the referee must have a whistle and it
should be an official whistle.
2. Uniform
- Must wear a proper officiating uniform or
wear at least a sports attire.
3. Must be know the game.
3. Must be accurate in making decision.
4. Must execute proper or correct hand
signals.
5. Must be fair in making decisions.
6. Must have the authority to facilitate the
game.

WHISTLING:
-You know class in officiating the referee
blows the whistle in different lengths and
different occasions like time-out, time-in,
calling violations and instructions. For time
in and time out, the referee blows the
whistle long, short for violations, and
repeated blowing in times there is
commotions.

HAND SIGNALS
-In officiating basketball game, the referees
use different hand signals in different
violations and instructions.

1. Jump Ball –basketball game is started


by tossing a jump ball to determine the
first possession of the ball. The referee
raises his arms showing two thumbs
up.

2. Time and Time violations


a. Stop the clock- the referee raises one
arm five fingers together and palms
facing forward.
b. Start the clock- from stop the clock
position the referee brings down the
arm in chopping position.
c. Five seconds violations-during
inbounds a player is given five seconds
grace period to inbound the ball from
the perimeter line and if violated the
referee will blow the whistle raising his
arm up showing five fingers and
awards the ball to the opposing team.
d. Eight seconds violations-each team
has eight seconds to cross the ball into
their court. Once exceeded the referee
blows the whistle, raise two arms
showing eight fingers.
e. Twenty four seconds and fourteen
seconds shot clock violations-each
team are given twenty four seconds to
shoot the ball during inbounds and
fourteen seconds in same possessions.
Once they exceeded the time, the
referee blows the whistle and
announces the violation (table officials
first blows the buzzer).
f. Three seconds violation-a player
stayed at the under goal three seconds
before a shot hits the rim.
g. Time-out-the referee blows the
whistle, hands in T-position. One arm
with finger pointing upward and the
other arm palms facing down touching
one finger.
3. Line violations
a. Stepping the line violation-occurs
during inbounds and out of
bounds. The referee blows the
whistle, points the line, and award
the ball to the opposing team.
b. Backing violations-occurs when
the player of the team goes back
to the court after crossing the
center line. The referee blows the
whistle, points the line back and
forth.
4. Foul-committed when a player
hits/touches the opposing player. The
referee blows the whistle, one arm
with closed fist up and the other arm
pointing the player committed the foul.
a. Blocking foul-when a player
illegally blocks the opposing player
carrying the ball. The referee blows
the whistle, signals the foul and
both arms in chopping position
palms facing up and hits the waist.
b. Illegal use of hands-one arm with
closed fist hitting the other arm.
c. Holding foul- The referee holds an
arm downward
d. Charging/Offensive foul-
committed by the player in
possession of the ball.-clenched
fist.

e. Unsportsmanlike foul-when a
player intentionally hits or hurt
an opponent. The referee blows
the whistle holds one arm
upward.
In calling a foul the referee goes near
the table officials and register the
jersey number of the player who
committed the foul.
5. Illegal Traveling- held ball. A player did
not dribble the ball. The referee blows
the whistle arms in circular motion.
6. Illegal dribble-a held ball or illegal
dribbling. The referee blows the
whistle, the referee in patting motion.
7. Deliberate football-a player
intentionally kicks the ball. The referee
blows the whistle, points his foot and
award the ball to the opponent.
8. Bench Violation/Technical Violations-
when a player or the team
misbehaved. The referee will announce
the violation to the table officials,
explains the call, at first will give a
warning.
9. Registering a point
a. Tree points attempt-the referee
raise one arm showing three
fingers.
b. Successful three points-the
referee raise both arms showing
two fingers.
c. Successful two points-raises one
arm showing two fingers.
d. Successful free throw-raises one
arm showing one finger.
e. Foul counted-a successful attempt
during a foul. The referee calls a
foul and continuously award a
successful attempt.
(The students will execute each hand signals)
In officiating, the blowing of the whistle must be
loud so that the players and the table officials must
be aware of the call as well as giving or execution of
the hand signal must be clear. Do not whistle for
unsure decisions. Do not just whistle, show the
hand signals in each call for violations.

V. Application
-Okay class everybody stand up let us execute
each hand signals.
