Lesson Idea Name: Unit 1: Introduction to Reflection
Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level(s): 8th Grade Content Standard Addressed: ✓ MGSE8.G.1: Students can use the properties of translation, rotations, and reflection on line segments, angles, parallel lines or geometric figures. ✓ MGSE8.G.2: Students can show and explain two figures are congruent using transformations. ✓ MGSE8.G.3: Students can determine the new coordinate of a figure given dilation, translation, rotation, or reflection. ✓ MGSE8.G.4: Students can describe transformations and/or dilations that produce similar figures.
Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered Learner
Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Office – PowerPoint
The flipped classroom lesson will be available in three different format – pptx file extension, an mp4, and a pdf transcript of the video. It is crucial that I provide a variety of mediums for the lesson, especially for my DHH (Deaf – Hard of Hearing) students. I will post all three formats on the classroom blog, which students will be able to access through a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone. Because of the objective of the lesson, it only meets one of the three principals of UDL – Representation.
Lesson idea implementation:
This is part two of a four part flipped classroom series that will introduce geometric transformation, reflection, rotation, and translation. The video file will be placed in the classroom blog for students to view at home. I will also make my classroom available prior to the start of school, so that students can view the video prior to homeroom. I will play the video in a continual loop from 8:15 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. Student’s need to come to class prepared because we will discuss the video during the opening session of the class. The rest of the class time will be dedicated to working collaboratively in groups to complete the “It’s All Fun and Games” project. The Introduction to Reflection will be available in three different format – pptx file extension, an mp4, and a pdf transcript of the video. The lesson will provide a general introduction of reflection and encourages that the students come to class ready with questions. The students will be informally assessed during the discussion session. I will ask key question to not only facilitate discussion but to determine student understanding. Reflective Practice: After designing the lesson, I am not so confident on how well it will impact student learning. Although it was an introductory lesson to Unit 1, I think that I will alter the lesson plan in the future. I think I will change Spring 2018_SJB Basic Productivity Tools (BPT) the lesson from teacher-centered to student-centered. I will present the students with a Jig Saw activity. I will assign portions of the unit for students to research, so that they can create a video that their peers can use to learn and review the concepts of Unit 1.
