CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background
INTRODUCTION
Korean Culture have invaded and been deeply rooted in our society. The youths are the
one who is most influenced by the Korean Culture or called as Korean Wave or “Hallyu”. The
Korean Wave refers to the global popularity of South Korea’s cultural economy exportin pop
culture, entertainment, music, TV dramas and movies. The generation today is different and
we, the youths are easily captured to the things around us. Because of Korean culture, we are
exposed in different kinds of food, music, entertainment industry, taste of fashion, cosmetics,
skin products, language and even though in business industry. Because of this situation, most of
business men or women or whoever wants to start their own business chooses to build
something that is related to Korean Culture because they know that it is trending or popular
here in our country. As a result, we didn’t notice that we’re slowly forgetting the importance of
our own culture and local products and it looks like we didn’t support the local business here in
our country.
Recently, Filipinos have apparently caught the Korean Culture fever that it is now just
common to see people flashing the Korean finger heart. Also because of K-dramas or Korean
dramas many Filipinos start to adapt the culture that the TV dramas showed. In terms of food,
many Filipinos want to eat some Korean foods like Kimchi, Samgyeopsal, Ramyeon, and Bulgogi
with chopsticks just for them to feel the Korean vibes. Because of this, many restaurants and
retail stores have also seized the opportunity to earn more profits with selling this kind of
foods. In terms of fashion, Korean fashion has spread and has gained popularity among the
Filipino masses. Most Filipino teens mimic the fashion sense of Koreans. As a result, many
boutiques that sell trendy Korean clothing and accessories can be seen in most shopping malls
around our country. Just like foods and clothes, Korean cosmetics and skin care products
become popular here in our country, as we are influenced by the Korean actress and actor who
have a healthy, glowing and moisturized skin.
A lot of people, mainly here in the Philippines are big fans of K-dramas, K-pop, and
Korean Idols. Regardless of not understanding the lyrics of their music, many can still burst into
their songs and mostly adding moves rhythmically to the music and claim it as their top list
favorite song.
The genre is often presented with choreography and repetitive “hook” making the
song easy to go along. The catchy music and dynamic choreography makes K-pop a big favorite
among Filipinos. The success of K-pop music in the Philippines is evident in the string of hits
from the previous years till the present topping the playlist of local radio stations.
In an exclusive talk with Philippine News Agency (PNA) with Korean Cultural Center in
the Philippines (KCC) Director Lee Jincheol said that Korean culture’s distinct is being open and
sincere rather than being exclusive and patriotic which can be seen in k-dramas. It deals with
the everyday lives of ordinary people, so the viewers could relate. In terms of K-pop effect, Lee
said this is very hard to define, since “it is a collection of other culture.” “K-pop songs reflect the
agonies, the scar, and the concerns of other people” he pointed out. What makes K-pop
unique, as for Lee, is its non-exclusiveness, since it embrace other culture.`
The unique Korean food has also been patronized by capturing the taste of Filipinos. The
initial hesitation about Korean dish has now been replaced with great appreciation. Perhaps the
most popular Korean food among Filipinos is the samgyeopsal and kimchi a salted and
fermented vegetables dish. Ramyeon is another popular Korean food that’s now available at
many local supermarkets.
Korean restaurants have grown nationwide proving that the taste of Korean foods is
really gaining ground among Filipinos. The proliferation of Korean Culture in the Philippines is
noticeable. This is reinforced by the coming of Koreans to the country to study or to do business
and doing concerts as for Korean idols. Well of course, local teenagers will patronize everything
they love about these and dressed up in a fashion that is inspired by Korean fashion. Catching
the Korean wave by Anna Patricia Valerio states that for years now, the Korean wave has been
making a big splash in the Philippines.
The group of researchers aim to know why Filipinos or Filipino Teenagers to be exact,
acquire Korean Products than the Local Products and why they slowly adapting the Korean
Culture.
