The Festival of Shavuot is one of the trhee Pilgrimage Festivals described in the Torah. It is
known as “Chag HaBikkurim” the day on which our ancestors brought the first fruits of the
winter harvest as an offering to God. It is known as “Chag HaShavuot” the Festival of weeks
because it falls seven weeks and a day after Pesach. And it is known as “Z’man Matan
Torateinu” the season of revelation, commemorating the day when our ancestors stood at Mt.
Sinai and received Torah. Like Shabbat, Shavuot is a day of joy, a day of rest, and a day of
holiness.
On Erev Shavuot the family gathers for a festive meal. There is a long standing tradition to eat
dairy foods on Shavuot: perhaps because the Israelites left Egypt on their journey to a Land of
milk and honey; perhaps becuase they had just been given the Torah with its rules for proper
slaughtering and kashering meat, and they didn’t have time to learn the rules, so they ate dairy
on that day.
For a boy:
For a girl:
May God bless this household. May it be a place of love and care, a place of listening and
sharing. May our thoughts and our actions, our words and our hopes give expression to the
highest ideas and ideals of our people and our heritage.

Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine.
Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the universe, Who has chosen us from among
all the peoples, and exalted us above other nations, and sanctified us through the
commandments. You, O Eternal our God, have lovingly given us seasons for rejoicing, festivals
and fixed times for celebration - and sepcifically this day of the Festival of Shavuot, the season
of the revelation, a sacred occasion and a remembrance of the exodus from Egypt. You have
chosen us from among the peoples, and with great joy You sanctified us to inherit Your holy
festival. Blessed are You, Eternal One, Who sanctifies the people Israel and the sacred times.
Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the universe, Who has given us life, sustained
us and brought us to this special time.

A song of Ascents: When the Eternal restores the fortunes of Zion - we see it as ina dream - our mouths shall be filled with laughter, our
tongues, with songs of joy. then shall they say among the nations, “The Eternal has done great things for them!” The Eternal will do great
things for us and we shall rejoice. Restore our fortunes, O Eternal, like watercourses in the Negev, they who sow in tears shall reap with
songs of joy. Though he goes along weeping, carrying the seed bag, he shall come back with songs of joy, carrying his sheaves.
