BIODIVERSITY INDEX

PROCEDURE:

1.Fold the paper in half crosswise. On the right side of the paper, draw a tree and of bird and
label it as Area X. On the left side of the paper, draw different specie of plants and animals and
label it as area Y.

(Draw
(Draw different

Take note that the number of species shown in each area and also the number of individuals in
each area. List the interaction that will take place between the same specie on Area X and
between the specie in Area Y.

Compute the biodiversity index. An index value near 1 is considered a biologically diverse area.

Formula:

𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎

Biodiversity index =
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑠

Guide Questions:

1. Based on your computation, which area is most diverse?

2. Was it easy for you to predict which group has most interaction? Why?
3. Does biodiversity richness mean the same thing as biodiversity evenness?
