POLYNOMIALS

TERMINOLOGY

COEFFICIENT- a numerical constant in front of a variable that indicates the number of times the variable
should be multipltied. example 5x, the number 5 there is called the Coefficient.

CONSTANT- is a fixed numerical value, that is the value of a constant remains unchanged. Example:
5x+5=y, 5 is the Constant.

EXPONENT- a value that indicates the number of times the base should be multiplied by itself. Example:
a^2 = a x a, 2 is called the base and the 2 is the Exponent.

EXPRESSION- group of numbers, symbols, and operators, that indicates a value. (without equal sign). 5x+
5=0, 5x+5 is the Expression.

EQUATION- has an equal sign `=' to show that two quantities have the same value. In the equation, the
quantity on the left of the equal sign must be equal to the quantity to the right of the equal sign. for
example 5+5=20-10 and 10=10. In the equation 5x-5=y the value of 5x-5 must be equal to y.

TERM- can be a single number, a variable or a combination of the two. Example : 5x+y=5 , the terms are
5x,y, and 5.

VARIABLE- is a symbol for unknown value. It usually express as letterssuch as a, b, x, or y. Example:

5x+5= y, the variables are x and y.

TWO TYPES OF VARIABLE

* Independent variable/cause variable- is a variable whose variation does not depend on that of other
variable. it causes a change in the dependent variable.

* Dependent variable/ Effect variable- is a variable whose value is determined by the value of the
independent variable. it also referred to as the effect variable, as its value is the result of a change in the
independent variable.

EXAMPLE; 5x-5=y. in this equation, x is the independent variable, and y is the dependent
variable. Suppose x= 2. the equation 5x-5=y would now be

5(2)-5=y

10-5=y

5=y

POLYNOMIAL- it comes from two words POLY means MANY and NOMIAL means TERMS. A Polynomials
can have two or more terms. it can be named according to its number of term and degree.
