Pre-Calculus: Understanding Circles

This document provides an overview of conic sections, specifically circles, for a pre-calculus class. It defines what a circle is, lists the key parts of a circle including radius, diameter, center, chord, and tangent/secant lines. It presents the standard form of the equation of a circle centered at (h, k) as (x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = r^2. Examples are given of determining the center and radius from given circle equations in standard form. Students are assigned practice problems determining the center and radius of various circle equations in standard form, and drawing and labeling all parts of a circle using different colored pens.

I. Topic : CONIC SECTION (CIRCLE)

Reference: Pre-Calculus for Senior High School. Egarguin N,J et al(2017),Pre-Calculus
for Senior High School, C&E Publishing Company.

II. Objectives:
 Define a circle and parts of it.
 Determine the standard form of equation of a circle and graph of it in a
rectangular coordinate system.

III. Concept Notes

Circle - A circle is the locus of a point that moves in a plane so that it’s distance from
a fixed points remains constant.

Parts of a circle:

Radius – is the constant distance ( segment connecting to the center and any point
on
the circle)
Center – is the fixed point ( not on the curve of a circle) equidistant from any point on
the circle.
Chord – is the segment connecting any two points of a circle.
Diameter – is the longest chord of a circle. That is one connecting any two points of
a
circle and passing through the center.
Tangeant line – is a line that touches the circle at exactly one point.
Secant line – is a line that intersects the circle at two points.

Standard form of equation:

Center ( 0,0) Center (h , k)

x 2+ y 2=r 2 ( x−h ) + ( y −k )2=r 2
2

Example:

Given the following equation of a circle. Find the center, radius and graph of it.

1) x 2+ y 2=4
c :(0,0)
√ r 2= √ 4
r =2
2) x 2+ y 2=36
c :(0,0)
√ r 2=√ 36
r =6

3) x 2+ y 2=16
c :(0,0)
√ r 2=√ 16
r =4

IV. Abstraction/Activity

a) Determine the center and radius of each of the following equation. Graph each of
the following (5 pts each)

1) x 2+ y 2=49 6) x 2+ y 2=25
2) x 2+ y 2=121 7) x 2+ y 2=9
3) x 2+ y 2=81 8) x 2+ y 2=169
4) x 2+ y 2=64 9) x 2+ y 2=56
5) x 2+ y 2=144 10) x 2+ y 2=100

b) Draw a circle and label each and every part. Use different colored pen to
differentiate each and every part.

V. Perfomance Tasks

a) Take atleast three picture that can represents to a circle that equidistant to the
center. Put in a short bond paper.

b) Create 2 scenarios that can represents to a circle.
