Design of base plates

For columns

Bearing strength of concrete fcc =0.45fck = 9.00 N/mm2 for M 20 concrete

Maximum factored load Pu = 30.000 KN
30000 N
Required area of the base plate A = Pu / fcc ( see support reactions)
= 3333 mm2
Choosing a plate of size Length = 400 mm Breadth = 300 mm
Provided plate area = 120000 mm 2

Now, maximum projection of base plate a= 50 mm and minimum b= 50mm

a = 50 b = 50
Now, pressure below base plate, w = 0.25 N/mm2 < 11.25 N/mm2
fy = 250 N/sqmm
Now, thickness of the base plate, tbp =
= 2.2 mm
Thickness of plates for pin joint 16 mm so, adopt tbp= 20 mm
Hence, provide 400 mm X 300 mm X 16 mm thk.

Design of Anchor Bollts

Select 4 nos of bolt for each base plate to be fixed with RCC foundation
= 30.00 KN
Maximum factored load Pu for each bolt = 7.500 KN
Approximate gross area of bolt
With fy= 250 N/mm2 for medium tensile steel = 47.6
Hence, provide 4 nos of 20 mm dia bolt
Area of each bolt = 314.3 mm2 each
Embedment length is to be 12 Db minimum as defined in ASCE.
As sufficient embedded length is possible in the foundation, we can provide higher value like 25 Db, with
hook of 5 Db to have higher shear pryout that governs in shear and concrete breakout governs in tension.
So, for 20 dia bolt let us keep the embeded length to be 500 mm with hook length = 100 mm

Shear stength of steel reinforcement = 186 N/mm2

For 8 nos 12 dia bar, shear capacity = 168356.6 N = 168.36 kN
So, side-face blow out will not happen in any pedestal.

Design of Welding connectionof base plate to column
For UC 203x203 Pu = 550 KN
h= 210 ; b f= 206 mm; tf= 14.2 mm; tw= 9.4 mm
Let us provide 8 mm fillet weld all around the column section
Total length available = 1196 mm
End return legth = 192 mm
So, effective weld length, Leff = 1004 mm
Capacity of the weld = 0.7*a*189/1000 KN/mm
= 1.058 KN/mm
Required length of weld = 520 mm < 1004 mm

Hence, provide 8 mm fillet weld, on the edges and not on the rounded end of the member.

For RHS 132x132x5.4 Pu = upto 366 KN

h= 132 ; b f= 132 mm

Let us provide 5 mm fillet weld all around the column section

Hence provide additional stiffner of 120 mm width200 long in all 4 corner as shown
Total length available = 1356 mm
End return legth = 0 mm
So, effective weld length, Leff = 1356 mm
Capacity of the weld = 0.7*a*189/1000 KN/mm
= 0.662 KN/mm
Required length of weld = 553 mm < 1356 mm
Hence, provide 5 mm fillet weld, with 8mm stiffners in all four corners.
