Design for shear

Design shear force(Vu) = 305.1286 KN
Design shear Stress(τ) = Vu/BD = 0.8475 N/mm2
τc= 0.64 N/mm2 (IS 456:2000 TABLE 19&20
τc,max = 3.1 N/mm2
Pu = 3996.996kN
For member subjected to axial compression Pu, the design shear
strength of concrete(τc) shall be multiplied by the following factor: (IS
456:2000 Cl.40.2.2)

δ = 1+3*Pu/(Ag*fck) = 1<1.5
so,
δ=1.5
Design shear strength of concrete = δ*τc = 0.96 N/mm2
Shear capacity of section, ( Vuc ) = 312.192 KN
As Vuc>Vu , minimum shear reinforcement is to be provided in the
form of lateral ties.

Design of lateral Ties

Diameter of ties should not be less than:
i)max. diameter of bar/4 = 5 mm
ii) 6mm
provide 8mm diameter ties.
Pitch should not be greater than: (IS 456:2000 Cl.26.5.3.2 C)

i) least lateral diameter = 600 mm

ii)16 times diameter of bar = 320 mm
iii)300mm
hence, adopt pitch =300 mm
Hence,provide 8mm Ø ties @300mm C/C.
Spacing between longitudinal bars = (600-40*2-8*2-25)/4 = 119.75 >75mm
Additional ties need to be provided.
Special Confining Reinforcement
Design of link near support:
Area of cross sectional of bar forming rectangular hoop to be used as confining
links:
Ash = 0.18sDkFck/Fy(Ag/Ak-1)
where, Ak=area of confined concrete core in the rectangular hoop measured to
its outer dimension

Dk= 536 mm
Ash= 490.8594 mm2
Ak = 22527.36 mm
Ag= 600^2 mm2

Ash = 0.18sDkFck/Fy(Ag/Ak-1)
Or, 490.8594 = 0.18*S*536*(25/500)*(600^2/22527.36-1)
or, S = 175.65 mm>100mm
Spacing of hoop should be less than 100mm and minimum of 1/4 of B or D
whichever is less. But, the spacing need not be less than 75mm. (IS 13920:2000
Cl. 7.4.6)

Adopt 8 mm @ 100 mm as special confining ties at a distance Lo.

(from IS 13920:2002 Cl.7.4.1)
Lo is given by larger of followings:
a) Larger lateral dimension = 600mm
b) 1/6 of clear span =2750/6 = 458.33mm c)450mm"

Hence, provide 8mm diameter links @ 100mm c/c for a distance 600 mm on
either side from the joint and 8 mm diameter lateral ties @300mm c/c in
central portion.

Splicing of Longitudinal Reinforcement

Maximum 50 % of the bars is to be spliced at one section.

Splicing should be done in the middle half of the column height.Transverse
reinforcement in lap length should have spacing not exceeding 150mm c/c.i.e
providing 100 mm c-c
(IS 456:2000Cl.26.2.5.1)
Clear Length of Lap = Development Length or 24ϕ, whichever is greater
We have adopted 50ϕ
Ld = 0.87fyϕ/4τbd = 0.87*500*25/4*(1.4*1.6*1.25)
.= 971 mm
Ld = 971 mm
