1. Consider the free motion in the xy plane of a compound pendulum which consists
of a rigid rod suspended from a point (Figure 1). The length of the rod is L and its
mass m is uniformly distributed over the volume. The thickness of the rod is t and
the width changes from 0 to b along the length. The angular displacement of the
centreline of the pendulum measured from the z-axis is denoted by θ(t).
a. Derive the equation of motion governing θ(t).
b. Linearize the equation for small θ.
c. Determine the natural frequency of the small oscillations.
2. Write the equation of motion of the one-story, one-bay frame shown in Figure 2.
Assume that the mass lumped at the beam is m, and all the remaining members
are massless. Neglect the damping.
3. A heavy rigid platform of weight w is supported by four columns, hinged at the
top and the bottom, and braced laterally in each side panel by two diagonal steel
wires as shown in Figure 3. Each diagonal wire is pretensioned to a high stress: its
cross-sectional area is A and elastic modulus is E. Neglecting the mass of the
columns and wires, derive the equation of motion governing free vibration in (a)
x-direction, (b) y-direction and (c) rotational motion (torsion) about the vertical
axis passing through the centre. (Hint: Because of high pretension, all wires
contribute to the structural stiffness.)
4. A rigid disk of mass m is mounted at the end of a flexible shaft (Figure 4). Diameter
of the shaft is varying linearly from d1 at fixed end to d2 at the other end. Neglecting
the weight of shaft and damping derive the governing differential equation for the
system. Shear modulus if shaft is G.
5. Derive the governing differential equation for the system shown in Figure 5 and
find its natural frequency and damping ratio assuming that string passing over
cylinder doesn't slip and the string is inextensible.
6. A block of mass m is dropped from a height h onto a rigid bar and it is resting on
it without slipping (Figure 6). Total mass of the bar is m and it is uniformly
distributed over its length. Derive the governing differential equation for the
system and obtain its displacement response.
