Take note of three characters who discovered themselves

- What is the discovery
- How did they discover
- Effect of discovery

1. Todd Anderson

- He discovered that the school officers forced his friends to sign the
testimony against Mr. Keating and he should tell Mr. Keating that the
school officers did it
- He discovered it when Mr. Keating excused to their class to get his
remaining things
- He shouted “they did it” repeatedly and Mr. Keating said that he knew
it. He stood on his table then the other students did it too as a sign of
their faith that Mr. Keating’s conscience is clear. Mr. Keating appreciated
it and said “Thank You”.

2. Knox Overstreet

- He realized that he should confess his love for Chris even though it will
be complicated
- He wants to call Chris but he was hesitant to do it until he remembered
what Mr. Keating said, Carpe diem which means “Seize the day”. So he
decided to call her then Chris invited her to a party at Chet Danbury’s
place. Then from that point he realized that he should not waste the
opportunity and ask Chris for a chance, one chance only and after that
it’s over.
- He made a poem for Chris and sneak into her school. He insisted to read
it for her even though Chris refused. He said at least he read it to her
even though she ignored it. Then Chris went to Knox’s place and
confronted him. Knox insisted to have a chance and accompany Chris to
the musical play and after that he will stop pursuing Chris.
3. Neil Perry
- He realized that he should pursue his passion for acting
- When he got the lead role to the play but his father knew it and tried to
stop him and ordered him to transfer to Harvard University
- Neil is devastated and turns to Keating for advice; his teacher advises
him to stand his ground and stand up to his father to demonstrate his
seriousness about acting. The following day Keating asks if he has
spoken to his father and Neil lies, saying that he had, and that he will
be permitted to pursue an acting career provided his schoolwork does
not suffer. The lie is discovered when Neil's father unexpectedly appears
at the performance, taking his son home and then forcing him to go to
military school so that he can go to Harvard and study medicine.
Terrified of his father and at a loss for what to do, Neil commits suicide.
