Hydroelectric plant not in use due to outstanding debt

Lydenburg has one of the very few hydroelectric plants in the country, yet it is not in use on account of monies owed by Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) to the service provider
MBB International in Mbombela. The hydropower station was built in 1982 and can assist the municipality in taking more than two megawatts of electricity off the Eskom grid. This
means that approximately 20 per cent of the town can be powered by the station in times of emergency or as backup. The plant has a Gilkes Pelton turbine of 2,6-megawatt capacities.
While hydroelectricity can be generated from naturally existing waterfalls, most hydroelectric plants generate water from human-made waterfalls. This town is one of the few that has a

Conjoined twins a first for hospital

LYDENBURG - An extremely rare
phenomenon occurred at Lydenburg Hospital
on March 17 when a set of conjoined twins
was born at this state institution.
The birth of the twins was confirmed
as being the first recorded set of
interfused newborns at this hospital by the
Mpumalanga Department of Health.
The 21-year-old mother asked authorities
not to name her and could not be reached
for comment on the birth of her two baby
girls. They are conjoined from the abdomen
to the chest and shared the same umbilical
cord. The twins were born with a combined
weight of 4,8 kilograms.
Dr Mokhtar Belghith assisted with the
birth and said none of them expected
conjoined twins beforehands. "On the sonar
it is difficult to establish whether twins are
conjoined. It is not easy to pick up. We
certainly were not expecting this at our
small hospital," Belgith told Steelburger/
Lydenburg News.
He said he saw the mother in the corridor
of the hospital. "She is a short lady and
it was arranged that she would undergo a

was doing my rounds, I was called to assist
as the twins went into foetal distress. An
emergency C-section was scheduled."
Belgith said twins can sometimes be
difficult to deliver as they are locked to each
other. "The first baby was out, but we were
struggling to get the second out. When the
second emerged, we discovered that they
were indeed Siamese twins."

He said the babies were not breathing and
turned blue, however, they were eventually
stabilised. "Their saturation levels also
dropped. It was extremely difficult to
supply both with oxygen, but we managed
to resuscitate them. It took us five hours to
stabilise the twins. It was challenging to
rotate the oxygen between them."
Lydenburg Hospital is not fully equipped
to treat twins, however, authorities said the
doctors and medical staff did a sterling job
with stabilising the babies.
In the meantime, the help of an ambulance
and helicopter was called in to transfer the
babies to Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
"It was also raining that day and we were
informed that the helicopter would not be
able to make it. The twins were transported
to the hospital via ambulance along with the
midwife."
Belgith said they had two separate hearts.

LYDENBURG - The answer to some of
the electricity woes can be found a mere
16 kilometres outside town.
Not many people are even aware of the
fact that this town has its own hydropower
station situated securely at the Lydenburg
Waterfalls.
The forgotten hydroelectric plant on the
Ohrigstad Road has been non-operational
for several years. This is on account of
non-payment by Thaba Chweu Local
Municipality (TCLM) to the service
provider MBB International in Mbombela.
The hydropower station was built in
1982 and can assist the municipality
in taking more than two megawatts of
electricity off the Eskom grid. This means
that approximately 20 per cent of the town
can be powered by the station in times of
emergency or as back-up.
The plant has a Gilkes Pelton turbine
of 2,6-megawatt capacities. While
hydroelectricity can be generated from
naturally existing waterfalls, most
hydroelectric plants generate water from
human-made waterfalls. This town is one of

According to DA MP Farhad Essack, the
town can save millions of rand in electricity
if the station was operational.
“Unfortunately, the service provider was
once again not compensated for the upkeep
and to generate the extra power of the plant.
I even suggested that a report be issued to
National Treasury for the funding to get the
hydrostation up and running again. In the
long run, it will be a win-win situation for
all involved.”
In June last year, the total money amount
to MBB was R1 022 354 as at July 9, 2015,
and instead of revenue generation, the
Lydenburg hydropower station agreement is
resulting in an unmanageable liability to the
municipality.

regarding the non-operation of the plant.

the matter on hand, as a pending court case
is ongoing. They did not mention whether
this is on account of the outstanding debt

Not only is the hydroelectric plant situated
at Lydenburg falls, but these waterfalls are
actually also one of Mpumalanga’s most
spectacular ones. Additionally, it is one of
the country’s highest waterfalls.
The Lydenburg falls boasts three separate
waterfalls. Two tumble side by side into a
large basin with pools adjacent to it, while
the third tumbles from that basin. The total
drop height is 244 metres, making it ideal to
power the hydroelectric plant.
How hydropower works

hydropower plants capture the energy
of falling water to generate electricity. A
turbine converts the kinetic energy into
mechanical energy. Then a generator
converts the mechanical energy from the
turbine into electrical energy.
The amount of electricity a hydropower
plant produces depends on two factors:
1. How far the water falls: The farther the
water falls, the more power it has. Generally,
the distance that the water falls depends on
the size of the dam. The higher the dam, the
farther the water falls and the more power it
has. Scientists would say that the power of
falling water is “directly proportional” to the
distance it falls. In other words, water falling
twice as far has twice as much energy.
2. Amount of water falling: More water
falling through the turbine will produce
more power. The amount of water available
depends on the amount flowing down the
river. Bigger rivers have more flowing water
and can produce more energy. Power is also
directly proportional to riverflow. A river
with twice the amount of flowing water as
another can produce twice as much energy.

Toddler has close encounter with
death after paraffin ingestion

BURGERSFORT - An innocent drink
from a cold drink bottle unknowingly
filled with paraffin almost took the life of a
toddler.
Being left alone for a few moments was
enough for Karabo Malepe (3) to stack some
furniture up against a cupboard to reach the
two-litre cold drink bottle on the shelf. She
thought that she was about to drink Sprite.
Her mother and grandmother were close
by but did not see her drinking from the
bottle, they only saw her running for a tap
to drink water. She told her mother, Tebogo
Malepe that her mouth felt on fire from the
cold drink that she drank. She showed them
the bottle that was lying on the ground.
How much she had ingested was not
known. Her mother rushed her to Dilakong
Hospital.
She was immediately put on a drip,
doctors pumped her stomach and she was
put on oxygen to prevent damage to her
lungs. She was in hospital for eight days.
After being discharged on Tuesday,
Tebogo was given strict instructions of what
the toddler was allowed to eat and what to
avoid.
“While we were in hospital two other
children were admitted also for drinking
paraffin,” Malepe told the newspaper.
According to her this is not uncommon
in household to store paraffin in cold drink
bottles.

• Unless instructed by a health-care
professional, do not induce vomiting in the
affected individual.
• Following ingestion of the substance,
immediately give water to drink.
• In case of symptoms that indicate
difficulty in swallowing including vomiting
or decreased alertness, do not give
anything by way of mouth.
• Take individual to the emergency room
for further treatment.
• Always try to take the compound bottle/
container to the ER.

New FTLM leadership ready to deliver

significant changes in the political and
administrative leadership of the Fetakgomo
Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM).
This was revealed during a strategic
planning meeting held at Lapeng Lodge last
Wednesday.

Speaker and chairman of FTLM council,
Tlakale Naume Phala as the new mayor.
“Phala has been elected anonymously as
the new mayor with effect from January 24.
His appointment comes months after the
resignation of Johannes Phokane following
the controversial VBS Mutual Bank
investment. This effectively means that
the position of the Speaker is vacant in the
council structure.”
Speaking to the media for the first
time since her appointment, Phala said in

There are only two weeks left before this
town will once again be host to the ever-
popular Lydenburg Heritage MTB and
Trail Run.
This yearly event takes place at the Gustav
Klingbiel Nature Reserve and will kick off
on April 13.
Since 2016, the Lydenburg Heritage MTB
Race has encouraged local MTB riders to
use the Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve to
enjoy the sport and nature simultaneously.
According to event coordinator, Charlene
Coetzee, they started with 30-, 17- and
10-kilometre routes and extended the
30 kilometre to a 40 kilometre with a gain
of over 1 000-metre elevation the last two
years.
The technical route with single track and
beautiful views over the Longtom Pass
Mountains gives experienced riders and
newbies a chance to enjoy MTB.
"With the new routes in Gustav
Klingbiel, more people could enjoy the
Nature Reserve throughout the year.
Lydenburg High School had 12 MTB riders
representing the province in 2018 since the
race started. We added a trail run in 2018 to
attract more people and the race has grown
every year.
"While the two races are on, a market
full of crafts, food, drinks and much more is
there for spectators to enjoy while waiting
for their friends and family. There will be
a lot of entertainment for kids, including
horse riding, a jumping castle, archery, bull
riding and much more to keep them happy
after their 5 km Kiddies MTB ride," added
Coetzee. With unique medals (mimicking
the Lydenburg Heads), goody bags for the
first online entries, heritage sites and info
along the route, along with local Lydenburg
hospitality, this is an event you surely need
to mark on your sports calendar.

• Pre-entries to the race can be done
between 15:00 and 18:00 on April 12 at
Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve
• Participants can also still enter on race day
from 06:30. The race kicks off at 08:00
• MTB trails include a 40-, 17- and
10-kilometre race
• Trail run and walk is 10 kilometres
• Kids 5-kilometre MTB race R50 on the day
- includes a goody bag, medal and T-shirt
• Pre-entries, T-shirts and goody bags can be
