EC-203: Signals & Systems
Autumn Semester 2019 Tutorial Sheet 1

1. Express signals x1 (t), x2 (t), x3 (t), x4 (t), and x5 (t) in terms of signal x(t) and its time-shifted, time-scaled,
or time reversed versions.

2. For the DT signal x[n] shown below, sketch:

(a) x − n+8

4 (c) xe [n] (e) x[2 − n] + x[3n − 4]
(b) x[n3 ] (d) xo [n]

3. The conjugate symmetric portion of a signal x(t) is defined as xcs (t) = (x(t) + x∗ (−t))/2. Show that the
real portion of xcs (t) is even and that the imaginary portion of xcs (t) is odd.

4. Let x(t) be a signal with x(t) = 0 for t < 3. For each of the signals given below, determine the values of
t for which it is guaranteed to be zero.
(a) x(1 − t) + x(3 − t)
(b) x(3 − t)x( 2t + 3)

5. Determine whether or not each of the following continuous-time signals is periodic. If the signal is
periodic, determine its fundamental period.

(a) x(t) = 3 cos(4t + π3 ) (f) x(t) = e−(2t−n) u(2t − n)

(b) x(t) = cos(2t) + sin(3t) n=−∞
(c) x(t) = cos(t)u(t)

(d) x(t) = e j(πt−1)

(e) x(t) = cos(2t − π3 ) (h) x(t) = Even{sin(4πt)u(t)}
6. Determine whether or not each of the following discrete-time signals is periodic. If the signal is periodic,
determine its fundamental period.

(c) x[n] = cos π7 n2

(a) x[n] = sin 7 n +1 (e) x[n] = cos 2n cos 4n

7. Verify the following statements for a CT system with excitation x(t) and response y(t).
(a) y(t) = u(x(t)) is nonlinear , time-invariant, stable, and non-invertable.
(b) y(t) = x(t/2) is linear, time-variant, and noncausal
(c) y(t) = cos(2πt)x(t) is time-variant, BIBO stable and non-invertible.
8. Consider a system S with input x[n] and output y[n] related by:

y[n] = x[n]{g[n] + g[n − 1]}

(a) If g[n] = 1 for all n, show that S is time invariant
(b) If g[n] = n, show that S is time variant
(c) If g[n] = 1 + (−1)n , show that S is time invariant
9. Determine whether the CT systems described by the following input/output relationships are linear or
nonlinear, causal or noncausal, time-invariant or time-variant, stable or unstable, and memoryless or with
memory. Justify your answers.

(a) y(t) = x(t − 2) + x(2 − t) 0, x(t) < 0
