Activity 1: Plot or Quadrat Sampling Method

1. Determine the total area to be sampled and set boundary in which to take samples.
2. Choose a random site for sampling by blindly tossing an object within the area.
3. Orient the square meter sampler by placing the random chosen point as the Northeast corner of
the sampler.
4. Record the number of individuals of each different species on the table provided.
5. Select 3 more random sites and repeat steps 3 and 4.
6. Complete data table 1 and share your results with the class to complete data table 2 and 3.

Activity 2: Line – Intercept Technique

1. Extend a cord or tape measure between 2 randomly chosen points. Make the line 50 meters long.
2. Begin counting at one end of the line and record only those plants physically intercepted by the
tape measure. Any overhanging tree canopy is included as on the line.
3. For each plant counted, measure the intercept length which is the distance on the line that is
covered by the base of the plant or clump of plants.
4. Record the intercept length for each plant on the data table sheet.
