Are photos ‘real’ nowadays?
Pictures of models and celebrities are nearly always changed to remove every ‘flaw’. So when a woman
with a tummy* appeared in a US fashion magazine it attracted global attention. Perhaps the worst thing
about the picture of the model is that we find it shocking at all. You look at that little roll of fat on
her stomach, something familiar to many women, and it looks out of place, because we are so used to
5 seeing perfect images where every defect has been eliminated. ‘People don’t ever see images like this in
magazines,’ says the model Lizzie Miller. But her photograph wasn’t adjusted, it was real.
Nearly every image we see nowadays in magazines, adverts and most newspapers has been changed in
some way. It isn’t the photographers who are the ones with the creative skill now, it’s the retoucher who
knows everything there is to know about Photoshop.
10 There are famous examples of retouching, such as Kate Winslet, who was angry when her legs were made
longer and slimmer, or Keira Knightley, who was given larger breasts for the publicity pictures of the film
King Arthur. This isn’t only about making people look thinner, it is the image of a new level of human
perfection, a world without wrinkles or bags under eyes.
Katie Grand, editor of the magazine Love, says ‘I used to find it interesting but now I feel bored with the
15 idea that beauty has become more like a painting than a photograph. When we started Love I wanted to
remind people of real photography and a representation of people that was much more honest.’

Are the dolphins in control?
At the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi, Kelly the dolphin has built up quite a reputation.
All the dolphins at the institute are trained to pick up any papers that fall into their pools and give them to a
trainer, who gives them fish in exchange for the rubbish. In this way,the dolphins help to keep their pools clean.
Kelly has thought of a better idea. When people drop paper into the water she hides it under a rock at
5 the bottom of the pool. The next time a trainer passes, she goes down to the rock and takes a small piece
of paper to give to the trainer. After she receives a fish, she goes back down, takes another piece of paper,
gets another fish, and so on. This behaviour is interesting because it shows that Kelly has a sense of the
future and keeps her reward for later. She has realised that a big piece of paper gets the same reward as
a small piece and so delivers only small pieces to keep the extra food coming. She has, in effect, trained
10 the humans.
Young dolphins stay with their mothers for several years, which means they have the time and opportunity
to learn a lot, particularly through imitation. At a dolphinarium, a person standing by the pool window
noticed that a baby dolphin was watching him. He was smoking. When he blew out smoke from his
cigarette, the dolphin immediately swam to her mother, returned and blew out milk, causing a similar
15 effect to the cigarette smoke. Another dolphin mimicked the noise made by a diver, copying the sound of
the air valve of the diving equipment with a stream of bubbles from his air hole.
