Commonwealth Geography Quiz

Hello students, as you’ll notice, there’s a bit more to master here than in the first quiz. The
format will change slightly: this time, rather than one blank map, you’ll have several, and there
will be more matching.
An additional hint: the quiz will tend to focus more upon the Commonwealth countries which
figured more prominently in the lectures.
1. The British in the Caribbean / Central & South America.

*Notice Bermuda in the Atlantic, on the way to Jamestown.

2. Canada
Political geography: The provinces/territories, the three most populous cities, the capital,
Vancouver Island.
Physical geography: the Canadian Rockies, the Hudson Bay, the St. Lawrence and Mackenzie
Rivers, the “Bread Basket”
3. Australia and New Zealand

The states, capital, and three largest cities.


New Zealand: the North and South Island, the Cook Strait, Wellington and Auckland.
The Outback
Australia: Botany Bay, Sydney (largest city), Melbourne (#2), Canberra (#8, the capital)
4. Asia, India, Southeast Asia

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka


Malaysia, Singapore
Hong Kong

 India: New Delhi (capital, 2nd largest city) and Mumbai (largest city); disputed Kashmir
region.

5. Africa

South Africa: the Cape of Good Hope, Capetown, Johannesburg (2 of 3 capitals). “Jo-burg” is
one of the top five largest cities in Africa.

The areas that are deserts.


Zimbabwe (former Rhodesia): the one the middle of southern Africa on this map (unlabeled, as
it left the Commonwealth).

Victoria Falls: on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe

Nigeria: the largest city, but no longer the capital, Lagos. Lagos is the most populous city in
Africa.
 Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and has the fifth largest population of
English speakers in the world.
Ghana: the capital and largest city, Accra
