Elanus leucurus Appearance: Light gray back; white tail and head;
black spots on shoulders
White-Tailed kites get their name from Size: 12”-14”; about 40" wingspan
how they hunt. They hover in one spot Location: Commonly around baseball field
(much like a kite) until they find their Season: Year-round
prey and dive down for the kill. They eat
small mammals, especially rodents, o Native
small birds, lizards, and insects. They
nest in the top of trees and live in
woodland and grassland environments.
